Royals Fall to Bulldogs in Sectional Final 48-46

March 11, 2009 -  Senior Wes Brandon's bucket with one second left providing the winning margin for the Centerville Bulldogs in a 48-46 victory Saturday night over Eastern Hancock in the Class 2A sectional final at Hagerstown.

Brandon’s bucket put Centerville ahead by two points with four-tenths of a second left on the clock. Bulldog fans stormed the court before realizing there was still time remaining on the clock and officials sent them back to the sideline.

That split-second remaining on the clock would have not been enough time to get off a catch-and-shoot scenario for Eastern Hancock. The inbounds pass by the Royals was batted away to end the game.

Centerville (16-7) moves on to face Winchester (19-3) this Saturday in the Connersville regional. Eastern Hancock was the defending sectional champion.

Centerville senior Drew Schauss led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points. He scored 14 of those in the first half, matching the output of the entire Eastern Hancock team.

The game was tied at 46-46 and Centerville called a timeout with 7.9 seconds left.

Schauss took the inbounds pass and dribbled toward the right baseline, finding Brandon wide open when the Royal defender came off of his man for the double-team. Brandon took the pass and hit a short turn-around jumper for the winning points a split-second before the buzzer.

Jacob Stewart finished with 10 points for the Bulldogs. Devin Tharpe led the Royals with 16 points and nine rebounds. Evan Roberts scored 10 points, while Steve Stunda and Dustin Smith had nine apiece.

Eastern Hancock completed the season with a 13-10 record.
