8th Grade Girls Crush Doe Creek With 4th Quarter Flurry

February 4, 2009 -  Knightstown’s eighth grade girls basketball team improved its record to 3-1 on the season by knocking off Doe Creek (New Palestine) 24-15 Monday night.

The Lady Panthers, coached by Cary Ellis, pulled away from Doe Creek after a sluggish first half. Knightstown led after one quarter 6-2, but scored just two points in the second frame and the game was tied at halftime, 8-8.

Knightstown then held Doe Creek to just one free throw in the third quarter and pulled out to a 13-9 lead. Libbie Fender then scored four points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Panthers put up 11 markers to pull away for the win.

Fender tied for team-high honors with Morgan McRoberts, who both had six points. Fender played a great all-around game, drawing several fouls on slower defenders and making clutch buckets down the stretch.

McRoberts also had an outstanding game, finishing with six points, six rebounds and collecting five steals. Lauren Shields also played extremely well, scoring four points, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds and gathering up five steals.

Allison St. John scored four points and had five rebounds. Erin Bundy and Ryanne Loveall both scored two points.

The Lady Panther eighth graders play at home tonight (Wednesday) against Blue River, and travel to Tri Saturday for a 2 p.m. make-up game.
