Boys JV Falls in OT, 34-33

January 28, 2009 -  Knightstown’s junior varsity boys basketball team fell into a deep hole early, rallied to put the game into overtime, and then eventually lost to the Mt. Vernon Marauders Saturday night, 34-33.

Knightstown hit just 1-of-8 from the field and turned the ball over six times in the game’s first six minutes. That put the Panthers in a 6-2 hole after one quarter. The situation got worse in the second frame, when the Marauders went on a 15-7 scoring run to increase their lead to 21-9 at the halftime break. In the second quarter the Panthers hit just 3-of-12 field goals, and the team was 4-of-20 from the field in the first half. Two of those field goals were provided by Chris Mefford, and Nolan Hall’s three-pointer kept the game from getting completely out of hand.

Knightstown immediately made things happen in the third quarter when Lane Fields scored and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw, but Danny Ortman grabbed the offensive rebound and got the put-back to cut the lead to 21-13.

Knightstown struck again on the next play when Anthony Forshey grabbed a rebound and started a fast break. Forshey hit Ortman, who then fed Aaron Forshey for the layup, cutting the margin to 21-15 and getting the Panthers back into the game.

After a Marauder bucket, Ortman answered with a long three-pointer that pulled the Panthers to within five points at 23-18, the closes the team had been since the first quarter.

Mefford scored the last four points of the third quarter for Knightstown as the Marauders took a 27-22 lead into the fourth quarter. They extended that lead to 29-22 before the Panthers put together a 9-0 run by shutting out the Marauders over the next four-plus minutes.

Mefford scored four more quick points, and then Anthony Forshey came up with another steal. He fed Jacob Taylor for two more points and suddenly it was 29-28. Knightstown took its first lead of the game on a bucket by Mefford, and went ahead 31-29 on a free throw by Joey Wyatt.

Mt. Vernon’s bucket in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter tied the game up at 31-all heading into overtime.

Aaron Forshey put the Panthers back on top at 33-31 when he scored on a nice pass from his brother, Anthony. The Marauders scored their last three points from the free throw line, but the Panthers missed a last-second shot that would have won the game.

Mefford finished with a game-high 14 points for the Panthers. Aaron Forshey scored six points, while Ortman had five. Hall scored three markers, Fields and Taylor had two apiece and Wyatt added one. Knightstown converted on just 1-of-6 free throws in the game.
