 Spikers Play Well in Loss

September 10, 2008 - Knightstown’s varsity volleyball team continued to show improvement, losing a four-set match against Guerin Catholic Monday night, as well as a four-set match against Mt. Vernon last Wednesday.

Monday night the Lady Panthers fell to Guerin 6-25, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25. It was a hard-fought match that featured changes in momentum. After a slow start, Knightstown played much better against a talented team.

Alexis Marsh led the Lady Panthers with a career high 11 kills, and Michelle Hochstedler added a career high 10 kills. Jodie Grant and Brittany Brown each added five kills.

Crystal Heim led the team in digs with 28, with Hochstedler adding 13 digs. Hannah Jackson led Knightstown with 15 assists and added three aces.

“After a disappointing first game, we responded well and started attacking much better,” Knightstown coach Chris Underwood said. “Marsh and Hochstedler were very aggressive tonight and the entire team is improving with each match.”

The loss dropped Knightstown’s record to 3-9 on the season. The team had a home match against Greenfield on Tuesday, and travels to North Decatur Thursday night.

Knightstown then returns to the home court next week. Triton Central visits Monday, Lutheran comes to town on Tuesday, Shenandoah visits Thursday and the Panther Invitational is next Saturday.

Knightstown’s girls lost the first game to the Lady Marauders 25-14, but came back in game two to surprise the hosts, 25-23. Mt. Vernon then took the next two games in very closely played matches, 25-23 and 25-22.

Knightstown libero Crystal Heim had an outstanding night with 25 digs, while controlling the majority of the Lady Panther serve receptions. Heim also had two aces on the evening.

Hannah Jackson led the Lady Panthers in assists with 13, added two aces, and had five kills. Alexis Marsh led the team in kills with eight.

The Knightstown junior varsity won its match in straight games, 25-15, 25-18, and is now 4-2 on the season.
