Mother Nature Foils Chamber Night at Mt. Lawn

June 25, 2008 - Rain fell at the Mt. Lawn Speedway for the first time Saturday around 3 p.m. With a little help from the wind and a few trucks on the track, practice started just a little past five. Qualifications got underway at 6:15, and the rain came back after 18 of the 21 Motion Motor Late Models in attendance had notched times.

Greenfield’s Eric Evans was fastest at 16.707. New Castle’s Terry Cater was second at 16.770, Jeff Marcum of Morristown was third at 16.799 and Scott Knepley of Knightstown was fourth quickest at 18.840. Only Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City, LJ Lines of Dunreith and David Fox II of Markleville were left with a chance to unseat Evans.

As Claborn came to the checkered flag, he got the yellow instead from flagman David Hill, putting an end to his qualification attempt. Several Thunder Cars came out on the track in an attempt to keep the track in shape, but it was soon realized that the track was soaked and the only way to dry it was for the rain to stop.

The rain continued and around 7 p.m., track officials, with the help of radar pictures of what was coming, called an end to the evening’s activities. Shortly after 8 p.m. another heavy thunderstorm hit the Mt. Lawn area while trucks and trailers were still leaving the pit area.

Mt. Lawn has rescheduled Chamber night for Saturday, July 26, when the UMRA Midgets return for their second appearance in 2008. Chamber rain checks from the Saturday, June 21 race will be honored for admission on July 26.

Motion Motor Late Models, Dependable Drywall Thunder Cars, Collins Auto Service Hornets, Central Indiana Mini Cups and Street Drags will make up the racing program this Saturday night.
