McRoberts Propels Girls Past Tri High 17-7

May 14, 2008 - Knightstown’s varsity softball team picked up a huge win and maybe some momentum heading into next week’s sectional. The girls took advantage of several walks and pounded out 10 hits in a 17-7, five-inning win over Tri High Monday night.

Kelsi McRoberts had a big day at the plate, ripping a double and triple, scoring two runs and driving home three more. Brittany Brown, who also picked up the win on the mound, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and another batten in.

Karsyn Mohler also had a huge day, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two batted in. Natosha Hiner plated three runs, Ashkia Howard scored three times, while Ashlee Wilkerson and Caitlan Marsischke both scored twice.

The Lady Panthers got off to a fast start after staking the Lady Titans to a 2-0 first inning lead. Knightstown batted around, erupting for 10 runs in the first frame. Hiner walked, Wilkerson reached on an error and Mohler sent both of them home with a triple that tied the game. McRoberts tripled and Brown slapped a single as the Lady Panthers sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning. In the first inning alone, McRoberts belted a double, triple and had three RBIs. Mohler, Wilkerson and Hiner all scored twice in that opening frame. When Hannah Jackson crossed the plate Knightstown had increased its lead to 10-2.

Tri managed to cut the lead to 10-7 in the top of the third before Brown slammed the door on the Lady Titans. She finished with six strikeouts, allowing just four hits and retiring the last eight batters she faced.

Knightstown got four more runs in the third on singles by Mohler and Hiner and a triple by Brown. Marsischke scored in the fourth and the Lady Panthers went up 14-7. They ended the game in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run rule.

Howard singled and McRoberts drew a walk. Brown then ripped a double, and with two outs, Marsischke drew a walk. That’s when Mariah Roland blasted her two-RBI single that ended sealed the Lady Titans’ fate.

Seniors Wilkerson and Howard played their final home game of their careers. The Lady Panthers played at Lutheran Tuesday night and close the regular season Thursday at Mt. Vernon. Knightstown plays Shenandoah in the fourth game of the Union County Sectional next week.
