Panthers Pound Liberty Christian 11-3; Showdown With #20 Centerville Next

May 7, 2008 - Without Joe Haase in the lineup, Knightstown needed some other players to step forward and provide some offensive punch. Jordan Bearhope and Rayburn Steinwachs did just that and the Panthers cruised behind the pitching of Zack Burchett to an 11-3 victory over Liberty Christian last week.

Bearhope and Steinwachs both had three hits and Burchett pitched a five-hitter in the convincing win. Burchett gave up all three runs in the sixth inning, the only time he ran into trouble in the game. The Panthers didn’t help him much by committing three costly errors in the inning, leading to all three runs being unearned. Those were the only errors Knightstown made in the game.

It didn’t matter that much, however, because Knightstown already led 9-0 before Liberty Christian could get on the board. Bearhope doubled twice, hit a triple, scored four runs and drove in two more in another ferocious day at the plate. Over the past five games, Bearhope is hitting .688 (11-for-16) with 13 runs and 10 RBIs.

Knightstown also got a huge game from Rayburn Steinwachs, who singled twice, doubled, reached base four times and drove home four runners. Steinwachs has hit .500 over the last five games (8-for-16).

The always-consistent Trey McColley also had a good day with a couple of hits and two RBIs. Jared Kayajan reached base three times and scored twice. Knightstown struck for five runs in the first inning and added three more in the fourth and two in the sixth.

The Panthers host Frankton tonight (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. and travel to play state-ranked Centerville Thursday.
