Optimist Club Boys Leagues Set Teams; Prep for Openers

April 2, 2008 - In just a few weeks the Knightstown Optimist Club youth baseball and softball leagues will be getting underway once again. Teams have already been compiled through the league drafts and uniforms are on order as coaches attempt to find good weather holes to begin preparing their teams for the upcoming season.

The defending champion Reds appear to be loaded with talent once again this season, although they lost several key players off a team that lost just one game and took the championship last season.

Gone are Drake Peggs and Spencer Mattix, the two star players who combined for six hits and six runs scored in the championship, a 16-2 victory over the Tigers. Alex Fields and Quadere Noe both had two hits and scored two runs, while Rufus Noe and Jared Mills both collected two hits. Noah Stone, William Noe and Jacob Rush all hit safely as eight different players scored and 10 had hits in the game for the Reds. None of those players are on the Reds’ roster this season.

In the championship game last year the Tigers responded with good offensive outings from Adam Bundy and Jared Waterman, who each went 2-for-3 and scored the team’s only runs. Travis Isaacs also had a base hit in the game. Isaacs was in on two of the best defensive plays during the game.

Twice Isaacs turned a double play, ending scoring runs by the Reds.
