8th Grade Girls Get Big Wins Over Doe Creek, Blue River

February 6, 2008 - Knightstown’s eighth grade girls basketball team won two games last week, defeating Doe Creek 32-21 and Blue River 35-21. Both games were on the road.

Coach Susan Crowe could not attend the Doe Creek game and Lady Panther head coach Dawn Basicker graciously filled in. Basicker got a good look at the Knightstown girls basketball future in the Doe Creek game as the eighth grade girls didn’t allow a field goal in the first half and bolted out to a 15-1 lead.

Michelle Hochstedler scored four first quarter points and Kaelee Kuhn added a bucket as Knightstown jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Kuhn scored four second quarter points, Ariel Sturgill had three and Hochstedler added two more. Doe Creek managed one free throw in the second quarter and had just one point at halftime.

Doe Creek scored seven points in the third period, but the Lady Panthers responded to that with a 15-point outburst. Kuhn scored eight points and Shay Pope had six in the third frame to extend the lead to 30-8 and put the game out of reach.

Kuhn finished the game with 14 points, while Hochstedler and Pope scored six apiece. Sturgill had four points and Margaret Pedigo added two.

Knightstown and Blue River were tied at 16-all at halftime, but the Lady Panthers tightened up defensively and held the Lady Vikings to just one second half field goal and five total points over the last 12 minutes.

Kuhn scored eight points in the first half, and Hochstedler added six more. Sturgill also had a bucket and the Lady Vikings managed to forge the halftime tie. But in the third quarter Knightstown blew the game wide open.

Kuhn scored four third quarter points, while Hochstedler and Pope added two apiece. An 8-2 third run opened up a 24-18 lead after three quarters. In the final period, Kuhn nailed a three-pointer and the Lady Panthers got buckets from Pedigo, Mahaley Hagy and Sturgill. Hochstedler also added two free throws as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Vikings 11-3 over the final six minutes.

Kuhn finished with 15 points and Hochstedler added 10. Sturgill added four points, while Hagy, Pedigo and Pope added two apiece.

The Lady Panther eighth graders travel to Richmond Test tonight (Wednesday) and host Eastern Hancock on February 14.
