McDowell, Panther Freshmen Knock off Trojans
January 23, 2008 - Cody McDowell had a monster game with a double-double as Knightstown’s freshman basketball team defeated New Castle Monday night in an overtime thriller, 40-39. The Panther boys also suffered a disappointing setback against Blue River in recent action.
Monday’s game was tied at 35 at the end of regulation, and Danny Ortman knocked down a three-pointer in the extra period. Nolan Hall also hit a bucket in the overtime as the Panthers held on to win over the bigger school.
McDowell had 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to pace a balanced Panther attack against the Trojans. Ortman finished the game with seven points, while Joey Wyatt scored six points on a pair of second quarter three-pointers. Lane Fields also scored six points, while Hall and Wes Hammer had four points each. Dillon Pugsley added two points and the Panthers converted seven-of-10 free throws in the game.
Fields also had six rebounds and four steals, while Ortman added five boards and two assists. Wyatt contributed with a team-high five assists and also had two steals.
Blue River handed the Knightstown freshmen a surprising 31-24 loss, exploding for 14 third quarter points. The Panthers led 7-2 at the first stop and increased that to 14-7 at the half. But the Vikings nailed four treys in the third quarter and went on a 14-8 run to cut the lead to one point. Knightstown then went cold from the field and managed just one field goal by McDowell in the fourth quarter. The Vikings outscored the Panthers 10-1 in the final frame, bringing the total second half damage to 24-10.
McDowell had another good game with 12 points, four steals and three rebounds. Ortman contributed with seven points, two steals and two assists.
Wyatt had three assists, while Hall had three points and Hammer two. Pugsley had two steals and two rebounds. The Panthers committed 14 turnovers in the game.
