Lady Panthers Fall 41-37 to North Decatur

January 9, 2008 - Knightstown’s varsity girls basketball team was outscored 21-9 from the free throw line and could never recover in a 41-37 loss to North Decatur last Thursday.

The Lady fell into a deep first quarter hole when the Chargers bolted out to a 15-6 lead. Four points from Brittany Brown and two more from Danielle Altman accounted for the only offense Knightstown could muster in the opening quarter.

The Lady Panthers came to life in the second frame, getting six more points from Altman and scoring production from six different players. Brown, Megan Hiner, Natosha Hiner, Haley Cruse and Sabrina Hatfield each hit for two points as the Lady Panthers went on a 16-10 run to cut the deficit to 25-22 at the half.

Knightstown tied the game after three quarters by going on a 14-11 run and knotting the game at 36-all. Jocelyn Sturgill scored five points and Sabrina Hatfield canned eight as the Lady Panthers were able to go inside to their bigger players and change the game’s momentum.

But North Decatur, which finished the game by canning 21-of-32 free throws, hit 13-of-20 in the second half and pulled the game out down the stretch. Knightstown was nine-of-14 from the charity stripe, a 12-point swing.

Hatfield finished with a team-high 12 points, and Altman scored eight. Sturgill had seven, with all coming in the second half. Megan Hiner and Brown both finished with six points, Natosha Hiner had five, Cruse scored two and Diana Trautmann added one.

The Lady Panthers traveled to Eastern Hancock (1-12) Tuesday night and visit Union County (5-6) Thursday.
