5th Grade Traveling Team Playing at Connersville
January 9, 2008 - Knightstown’s fifth grade traveling basketball team is going up against some tough competition while playing in the Hoosier Basketball Association at the Spartan Bowl in Connersville.
The Panthers played well against an all-star team from Franklin County, losing a tough game 29-25. The atmosphere has been a learning experience for the young players.
“This is the first time any of our players have had experience playing in a fieldhouse environment,” Coach Joe Kwisz said. “We have fared pretty well in our first two games, but have yet to find a victory out there.
Knightstown lost its first game to the team from Union County, 31-19. The Panthers led the first three quarters, but couldn't get a shot to fall in the fourth and were held scoreless. In their second game they fell to Franklin County.
“In our most recent game, hustle was our biggest attribute,” Kwisz said. “Our kids scraped for every loose ball and were extremely aggressive on defense, making shots hard to get for the opposition.
“Both (coach) Jarrett Hagy and I are very proud of the way our team has played in the first two games. The league we are competing in is a much faster pace than the local optimist games. Our boys have stepped up to the challenge and are practicing and playing extremely hard. I am sure that we will get our first win very soon.”
Against Franklin County the Panthers got good performances from several players. Jake Kwisz had a double-double with 19 points and 12 steals. Ben Haase had six steals to go along with two points and two rebounds.
Nolan Hagy scored two points and grabbed three rebounds, while Broderick Angel scored two points, had three boards and two steals.
Zach Manley pulled down a team-high six rebounds and collected four steals. Samuel Moore had seven steals and three rebounds, while Chris White also contributed.
The team’s next scheduled game is Sunday at The Spartan Bowl. The Panthers will play the Shelbyville Cassidy Squad. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
