4th Quarter Breakdown Dooms Panthers Against Guerin Catholic

January 2, 2008 - The Knightstown Panthers would have shot a lot better in the fourth quarter, but the rim kept getting in the way.

Knightstown dominated the game from the onset against Guerin Catholic, leading most of the way behind a monster game from sophomore Zach Apollos. But the Panther players inexplicably quit looking inside for the big man and scored just two points in losing the game 65-57. The setback undoubtedly cost Knightstown the Holiday Tournament title. Guerin defeated Indianapolis Washington handily in the championship game 64-49.

Knightstown led 55-52 entering the fourth quarter, but the Panthers managed just one field goal in the final period.

Apollos dominated the game on the inside, scoring eight first quarter points as Guerin held a slim 14-13 lead. A trey from Seth Apollos and another bucket by Kyle Buckley kept the game close.

Zach Apollos then struck for six more second-quarter points to give him 14 in the first half. Three-pointers by Seth Apollos, Colton Kinnaman and Brice Biehl, and buckets from Anthony Hibbert and Jordan Bearhope, enabled the Panthers to take a 33-28 halftime lead.

Apollos then took control of the game in the third quarter. He scored 11 points in the frame and got help from Biehl and little brother Seth, who both nailed treys. Two more by Kinnaman gave Knightstown a 55-52 lead heading into the final quarter.

Then the bottom fell out and the Panthers began to settle for long-range jumpers. One after another the ball caromed off of the rim, enabling Guerin to go on a 13-2 fourth quarter run. A Knightstown team that had averaged more than 18 points per quarter and scored 20 and 22 in the middle two periods, would get just one Zach Apollos bucket over the final eight minutes.

Zach Apollos finished with his fourth straight double-double, scoring 27 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Seth Apollos had 12 points on four three-pointers. Biehl scored seven points, Kinnaman had five, while Hibbert and Buckley scored two apiece. Knightstown was outscored 12-1 at the free throw line in the game.

Ryan Nowicki had 22 points and Alex McPeek had 14 to lead the Golden Eagles.
