Tri High Claims Sectional Title With 17-4 Win Over Ritter

Nov. 7, 2007 - Tri High’s varsity football team kept its season alive by upsetting the previously 10-1 Northeastern Knights 17-14 last Friday night.

Coach Bryan Peggs Titans made two key defensive stops in the second half and came up with some crucial play on special teams to pick up the sectional championship.

Northeastern gained more than two times the number of total yards in the game as Tri and made three times as many first downs. But the Titans (7-5) came up with the crucial plays when they needed them to secure the win. Tri will play Indianapolis Ritter (9-3) in Friday's regional.

Michael Fleenor caught three passes for 95 yards for the Titans, who managed just 144 total yards. Northeastern finished with 335 yards of offense and had 18 first downs, compared to six for the Titans. A Lee Spurgin field goal from 27 yards out put Tri up 3-0 on their first possession. Eric McNew and Wagner recovered Northeastern fumbles to thwart the first two Knight drives.

A 56-yard reception by Fleenor on third down on the Titans second possession of the second quarter gave Tri great field position. Four plays later Wagner scored on a seven-yard run to put Tri up 10-0.

Northeastern was forced to punt on the next possession, and Hanson fielded the ball on his own 25-yard line. Behind great blocking and a superb return, Hanson rocketed 75 yards for the touchdown to put the Titans up 17-0.

Northeastern seized the momentum and scored twice late in the game. The second touchdown came with 8:32 left in the game and cut the lead to 17-14.

Tri made its only first down of the second half on a clutch fourth-and-nine late in the fourth quarter. Wagner threw a nine-yard halfback option pass to Hanson to keep the game-killing drive alive.

Northeastern got the ball back with 4:50 to play on its own 34. They drove deep into Titan territory, but on fourth down Knight quarterback David Roeder was tackles short of the first down. Tri then ran out the remaining minute of game time to secure the sectional championship.
