 Challengers, Eliminators Advance in Girls Major League Tourney


June 27, 2007 - Allison St. John had two hits and scored three runs, and Kiersten Hammer drove home two runners to lead the Knightstown United Methodist Church Challengers Purple Rain to an 18-10 victory over the Knightstown Gentle Dentist Angels in girls major league tournament play last week.

St. John went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and another batted in. Hammer drove in two runners and plated a marker her self as the Purple Rain received offensive output from a number of players.

Sarah Johnson, Casey Back and Susie Hatton all scored three times for the Purple Rain. Shyron Sturgill and Kori Biehl scored twice. Hammer and Kirsten Grider also crossed the plate.

The Angels got two runs apiece from Shelby Patton and Katie Kortz. Kortz went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and another batted in. Hannah Morgan went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Libbie Fender and Michaela Colestock both scored a run and drove in another.

Sarah Simpson had the other hit for the Angels, and Macy Burton, Erika Messer and Lyndsie King all scored runs.


The Erwin Excavating Eliminators saw 10 players cross the plate in a convincing 20-10 win over the Knightstown Gentle Dentist Angels in girls major league tourney play last week.

Taylor Hardeman had a monster game for the winners. She clobbered two home runs, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an eye-rubbing seven runs batted in. Morgan Helderbrand, Chelsea Erwin and Shawna Rigdon had the other hits for the Eliminators.

Helderbrand and Kimmie Steinmetz also scored three times. Emily Sander, Chelsea Erwin, Emily Crain and Kerry Mulholland plated two runs apiece for the winners, while Hayley Hardeman, Sydney Grizzell and Shawna Rigdon scored once in the balanced attack.

The Angels received a tremendous game from Katie Kortz, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored three times. Michaela Colestock went 2-for-3 and drove home four runs for the Angels.

Libbie Fender had two hits and a run scored. Hannah Morgan hit safely and scored two runs, while Sarah Simpson also had a hit and a run scored. Erika Messer scored; Taylor Halcomb had a hit, while Lyndsie King and Macy Burton had RBIs for the Angels. Shelby Patton plated one run in the game.
