 Optimist Major League Softball Underway


May 2, 2007 - Recent Knightstown Optimist Club girls major league softball game results were reported to The Banner as follows:


Mahaley Hagy pitched a three-hitter in leading the Quality Hardwood Tornadoes past the Knightstown Gentle Dentist Angels 15-1 in Knightstown Optimist Club girls major league softball action last week.

Hagy gave up hits to Libbie Fender, Brooke Parsons and Sarah Simpson, allowing just one run when Hannah Morgan was able to score.

Hagey also went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Lauren Shields, Jami Laford and Jordyn Goodsene scored two runs apiece for the winners, while Larissa Shields, Kaleigh Burkman, Madison Hembree, Cassandra Cox, Bonnie Huckeby and Reasha Steinmetz also scored runs.

The Tornadoes are coached by Shannon Hagy and Rick Shields. The Angels are coached by Penny Patton and Mike Fender.


The Erwin Excavating Eliminators pounded out eight hits in defeating the Knightstown Gentle Dentist Angels 18-8 last Friday. Coached by Shannon Erwin and Carrie Hardwick, the Eliminators struck often and early against the Angels.

Morgan Helderbrand had two hits and scored three runs, while Emily Lewis also had two hits and scored twice. Sydney Grizzell and Hayley Hardeman plated three runs apiece, and Taylor Hardeman and Emily Sander scored twice for the winners.

Kerry Mulholland, Kim Steinmetz and Chelsea Erwin also scored for the Eliminators, and Shawna Rigdon hand an RBI.

Michaela Colestock went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Angels. Katie Kortz scored three times, while Hannah Morgan, Macy Burton and Brooke Parsons also scored runs in the game.


The Quality Hardwood Tornadoes pulled out a hard-fought victory over the Coor Consulting Choppers last Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Pitcher Mahaley Hagy struck out seven batters in three innings, and Lauren Shields fanned four in two innings for the winners.

Jordyn Goodsene scored three runs, while Hagy scored two runs and drove in two more with her team’s only hit. Jami Laford scored twice, and the Tornadoes got single runs from Larissa Shields, Lauren Shields, Cassandra Cox, Bonnie Huckeby, Reasha Steinmetz and Abby Moles.

Jackie Hastings hit safely and scored two runs for the Choppers. Other runs were scored by Bethany Jackson, Breanna Fields, Ciara Kline, Brittney Dean, Patty Jones, Megan Taylor and Shelby Hall.


Hayley Hardeman picked up the win on the mound for the Erwin Excavating Eliminators, while Alison St. John took the loss for the Knightstown United Methodist Church Challengers Purple Rain.

The KUMC Challengers Purple Rain is coached by Cindy Biehl and Cheryl Hammer. No additional game details were available.
