Knightstown 5th Grade Girls Beat Cascade to Win Title
February 14, 2007 - Knightstown girl’s basketball program has captured yet another title. This time the fifth grade Lady Panthers defeated the Cascade Lady Cadets 23-22, to come away as HGBL winter league champions for the 2006-2007 season.
The contest was in doubt to the final horn, and neither team could build a lead of more than four points.
Cascade jumped to 4-0 lead in first quarter, only to have Jill Gross score on a lay-up off a steal. Hannah Gross knocked down a jump shot to pull the Panthers even at 4-4 after one quarter.
Knightstown went on top 7-4 on Haley Hardeman’s old-fashioned three-point play. But the Lady Cadets responded with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 11-7. Casey McDowell’s rebound bucket in the final minute pulled Knightstown to within 11-9 at halftime.
Hannah Morgan opened the second half with a jumper from the free throw line, and Jackie Hastings added a lay-up to give the Lady Panthers a 13-11 lead in the see-saw battle. After Cascade went back up 15-13, Casey Back took over, scoring seven points for the red and black in the quarter. The game was tied at 20-20 at the end of three periods.
Defense was the order of the day in the final stanza. Besides a Jill Gross bucket and a Lady Cadet lay-up, the score remained tied until Hastings was fouled with 9.3 seconds remaining. Missing the first of two free throws, she calmly drilled the second to give Knightstown a 23-22 lead.
Cascade managed a short jump shot at the buzzer, but missed long and left. The Panthers rebounded the errant shot and held the ball the final second and a half for the victory.
Back led Knightstown’s scoring with seven, all in the pivotal third quarter. Jill Gross added four, Hastings and Hardeman three a piece and Morgan, McDowell and Hannah Gross finished with two each.
The ladies will be playing in the HGBL state tournament this weekend. At press time, the schedule had not been set.
