Governor Awards Local Man Top State Award

May 21, 2008 - Governor Mitch Daniels honored a local man and other state employees during a special ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse on May 8.

Longtime Wayne Township resident Willard Plank, chief investigator for the Indiana Department of Correction, received a 2008 Public Service Achievement Award for his work heading the DOC's Fugitive Apprehension Unit since its inception in 2007. According to a press release issued by the governor's office, the FAU, under Plank's guidance, identified 1,083 DOC prisoners who had escaped since the 1950s, located 455 of them, and returned 58 to incarceration.

"It was certainly an honor being recognized by Governor Daniels," Plank, a 32-employee of the DOC, told The Banner. "It was much appreciated and quite exciting." Daniels honored 64 state employees with 2008 Public Service Achievement Award, some individually and others for team efforts. Individual recipients, like Plank, each received a medal and $1,000.

The Public Service Achievement Awards, jointly sponsored by the Office of the Governor and the Indiana State Personnel Department and now in their fourth year, are issued to commemorate Public Service Recognition Week, which was the first week of May. A complete list of this year's award recipients and their accomplishments is available at: www.in.gov/gov/uploads/2008_Program_final.pdf.
