Local Alpha Zetas Preparing 100th Anniversary Celebration

February 27, 2008 - Alpha Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Knightstown, will be celebrating its 100th birthday March 15th at the Friends Church in Spiceland.

A Tea of Celebration will be held from 2 to 4 Saturday afternoon and state council officers, current and past province officers, resident inactive members, associate members and active chapter members have been invited.

Event Chairman Janet Linch reported that all committees are actively involved in the preparation. These committees include: invitations – Shannon Dawson, Barb Haase, Mary Jo Purtee and Sherry Trainor; entertainment – Janet Davidson and Mary Jo Purtee; photographer – Carol Zeilinga; thank you notes – Dorothy Hatton and Kathy Zeilinga; media relations – Janet Davidson; historical display – Cindy Biehl and VeeAnn Schmidt; set-up and site coordination – Cindy Hammer, Libby Henshaw and Jill Null; food and beverage – Betts Adams, Patti Keesling, Paula Ortman and Denise Titus; gifts/flowers – Susie Leonard, Cynthia McDonald, Karen Vise, Shannon Dawson, Dorothy Hatton and Penny Shaneyfelt; decorations/paper products – Lois Brooks, Brenda Buck, Nancy Gross and Marsha Jester; programs – Susie Leonard and Janet Linch.

When the original nine charter members requested that a charter be granted to Knightstown, introductory remarks were made to the council for verification of their standing in the community. It was reported that “Mary L. Newby is a graduate of The Castle in Tarrytown-on-the Hudson and is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity at DePauw University. Mary Wagoner is of the class of ’08 and will be entering DePauw in the fall. Another DePauw connection is Edna Carroll who is an ’05 Knightstown graduate and is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity at DePauw. Edna Wink is also an ’05 Knightstown High School graduate and is a Kappa Kappa Gamma member at Butler University. Erma Carey and Ruby Copper are Knightstown High School graduates. Ada Binford is an ’06 Knightstown graduate and is attending Earlham College and Ruby Zion, an ’08 graduate will be attending Earlham this fall. Lucile Garritson who graduated from Knightstown High School in 1907 entered Northwestern University last fall.”

These pioneering ladies represented the best there was in the community and once the chapter was installed March 27, 1908, the sorority flourished and grew to what it is today, an ever-present contributing organization that sees the needs of others and fulfills those needs. 100 years of service – 100 years of caring.
