 Opal Hughes Hosts WCTU Meeting

November 28, 2007 - The Knightstown Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) met Monday, November 19, at the Knightstown home of Opal Hughes. Eleven members and two guests attended. The meeting opened with everyone introducing themselves.

World President Sarah Ward performed the white ribbon recruit ceremony for Emerson Flowers. This is a ceremony where parents pledge to teach their child under the age of six to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and drugs. In turn, the WCTU members pledge to pray for the child. A white ribbon is tied around the child’s arm. The mother is presented with roses.

The membership and flag pledges were given. Devotions were given by Marilyn Riggs. She chose Ephesians 6:10-18 for her scripture. This revolved around putting on the breastplate of righteousness and the shield of faith.

The program was given by Sarah Ward. Her report was on a book entitled, Ella A. Boole, Dauntless Leader. According to Ward, Boole held positions in the state, national and world WCTU. She was world WCTU president at a perilous time: World War II. She managed to keep all the unions together throughout the conflict.
