 Zaph Hosts Extension Homemakers

March 28, 2007 - The annual salad bar and regular monthly meeting of the Town and Country Extension Homemakers was held on Tuesday, March 20, at the home of Melody Zapf near Charlottesville beginning at 6:30 p.m. A delicious meal was enjoyed following prayer by Sue Willcox.

President Pam Bever called the regular meeting to order at 7 p.m. The pledge to the American flag and the Homemaker's Creed were recited in unison. For devotions, Zapf told about the history of the Easter egg and other Easter traditions.

The roll call was answered by eight members on "Your favorite basketball team." Diana Lee gave the secretary's report for the February meeting and Brenda Reece gave the treasurer’s report.

For health and safety Sandra Van Hoy presented the report on "Healthier Teeth mean a Healthier You." She stated that your mouth is like a barometer of your overall wellbeing.

Kathryn Waits presented the cultural arts lesson on another famous Indiana woman, Patricia Miller, co-founder of Vera Bradley Designs along with Barbara Bradley Backgaard, which is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

During the business session plans were made to eat out before attending the county tea on March 27 at the Henry County library.

The lesson on "Frozen Assets" was given by Melody Zapf. The lesson began with a quiz on how long various foods should be stored in the freezer. The quiz was won by Pam Bever and Kathryn Waits.

Some of the ideas presented during the lesson included “FIFO” (First in, first out) Use the oldest dated packages first.

Check expiration dates. Discard when past the expiration date. Make a monthly meal plan. Keep your freezer at 0 degrees F or below.

Melody gave each member a freezer inventory, a monthly menu planner, and several make ahead freezer recipes. Members were able to sample a freezer carrot cake from the list which was very good.

Those attending the salad bar and meeting were Sonnie Thompson, Pam Bever, Diana Lee, Melody Zapf, Sue Willcox, Brenda Reece, Sandra VanHoy and Kathryn Waits.
