Big Blue River Watershed Project Underway
April 15, 2009 - The steering committee for the Big Blue Watershed project met at the New Castle Henry County Public Library on April 7. Attending were Elisa Grafford, John Waterman, Dennis York, John Rogers, Paul Herr, Kathy Rogers, Jeff Ray, Randy Jones, Tony Wright and Kellie Harding.
Introductions were made and Committee Chairman Ray welcomed the group.
Grafford reported on activities that she has been working on since the March 10 meeting. She met with New Castle Mayor Jim Small and Bobby York. She attended the Hoosier Riverwatch training for water quality chemical and biological monitoring. The first "Big Blue News" was mailed out to watershed stakeholders. Grafford also met with Eric Cox at The Banner in Knightstown.
Grafford reported that she has been working on the first section of the Watershed Management Plan. The first section, which includes a mission statement, land inventory and detailed maps, is due to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management April 14. A draft of the Watershed Management Plan will be emailed to the steering committee and other stakeholders for review.
The Quality Assurance Project Plan was discussed and water sampling sites have been determined. Water quality testing begins in April. The Garner Street dump site was discussed. Paul Gona with the Henry County Health Department mentioned that water testing has been done along the river near that site.
Harding passed out in-kind match sheets for volunteers to record their time and mileage spent towards the project. These sheets need to be submitted to Harding at the Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District office prior to each quarterly report. The next quarterly report is due April 14.
The next committee meeting is Tuesday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. Location to be determined.
