 Dozens Show Up for Grant Workshop

March 25, 2009 - It was a full house at the Henry County Community Foundation on March 11. There were 80 non-profit organizations represented at the community foundation’s 2009 spring grant workshop, compared to 60 organizations at the spring 2008 grant workshop. The number of non-profit organizations and programs in need of financial assistance has quickly risen in twelve months time.

Executive Director Jerry Schaeffer told grant-seeking non-profit organizations, “The community foundation received over $800,000 in requests last year (2008) and approved around $300,000 in grants from available funding.” The Henry County Community Foundation, Inc. evaluates all aspects of community well-being – arts and culture, community development, education, environment, health and human services – and awards grants to select projects and programs. Schaeffer also indicated the community foundation does matching grants.

Following a review of the application and guidelines, a question and answer session was conducted. When asked if an organization can submit multiple applications, Schaeffer indicated “This has occurred in the past.” Grants Committee member Penny York stated, “If you have three or four projects, have in mind the most viable and valuable.”

Schaeffer also stated, “All grant applications are due March 31 by noon. We turn the applications over to the Grants Committee; and they will contact organizations within two weeks. The committee then meets to discuss all grant applications and prepares recommendations for the Board of Directors. We should know grant approval/denial results by April 30. If you don’t receive a notification by then, please contact us. Call us or stop by the office if you have question. There is no such thing as a dumb question.” Program Director Jennifer Fox added, “We want to help you out.”
