ISSCH Students Celebrate Lincoln's 200th Birthday

February 18, 2009 - On the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln the students and staff of Morton Memorial School celebrated in grand style. During the week preceding the official birthday, students participated in a coloring contest, penny trivia and Lincoln trivia contests.

Scott Hays, a lawyer from New Castle, spoke to the students during a convocation about the legacy of President Lincoln. Hays highlighted the traits that President Lincoln is so famous for: honesty and citizenship.

The culminating activity was a ‘Lincoln Birthday Bash’ sponsored by Character Counts and Morton Memorial’s student council. Lighted candles adorned the four cakes and sparkled and popped as the student body sang “Happy Birthday” to President Lincoln. Other celebration activities included making their own ‘Lincoln Birthday Hat’, beach ball volleyball and sharing in the cake and ice cream.

Morton Memorial Student Council members also thanked various individuals, businesses and organizations in the Knightstown community for blankets donated to the council’s holiday blanket drive. The group collected over 60 blankets, which were distributed to those in need.

Student Council members and staff members who helped organize the blanket drive included Andre Brewer, Virgil Smith, Derek O’Brien, Jazmine Tarver, Jean Cobbs, DaNina Graves, Nancy McCullers, Nicole Flynn, and Sharon Fox.
