 CAB Holds Second Strategic Planning Meeting

February 18, 2009 - While the Charles A. Beard School Board had hoped its second strategic planning meeting would have better run a little shorter than the first one held two weeks earlier, such was not to be the case.

The Jan. 26 and Feb. 9 meetings both lasted about two-and-half hours. As had been the case with the first meeting, the board again spent its time developing belief statements for more of the eight categories it has agreed to address as part of its long-term strategic planning.

Picking up where they left off at the conclusion of the Jan. 26 meeting, the board continued developing belief statements for the Curriculum/Instruction category. The board agreed to the following:

           *Curriculum and instruction are based on research-proven methods that enable real-world application of skills;

           *Curriculum and instruction must be aligned with the standards set by the state of Indiana;

           *Instruction is enhanced when students are provided with interesting and engaging experiences; and

           *It is the role of the school corporation to promote a high level of participation in post-secondary education and training.

Moving on to the Budget/Finance category, board members agreed to the following belief statements:

           *Financially sound school corporations maintain an appropriate amount of working capital to insure student success in all economic climates;

           *Educational return on investment is achieved when the school corporation maximizes educational achievement through prudent use of its resources; and

           *Taxpayers have a right to expect the school corporation to be a good steward of all its revenues.”

The board has now worked through three categories: Student Achievement; Curriculum/Instruction; and Budget/Finance. Remaining categories include Extracurricular Activities, Facilities, Technology, Personnel and Community Relations.

Once the board finishes developing its belief statements for the eight categories, the board is expected to conduct assessments, set goals, develop strategies to meet their goals, develop action plans, and then, finally, execute plans and evaluate progress.

The next strategic planning meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23. At this time, the location of the meeting is tentatively scheduled for the board meeting room in CAB’s central office, 345 N. Adams St., Knightstown, but this could change. Persons interested in attending are advised to call central office at 345-5101 to verify the meeting location.
