EH Meats Judging Team Places Third Nationally
January 21, 2009 - The Eastern Hancock FFA/4-H Meats Evaluation Team traveled to Ft. Collins, Colo., on Saturday, January 10, to participate in the National Western Meats Evaluation Contest. The contest was held on the campus of Colorado State University.
The team of Sarah Mueller, Shannon White, Breanna Lawyer and Tabitha Parke placed third in the contest. Coached by Natalie Schilling, the team earned the opportunity to attend the national event by merit of their second place finish at the state contest in 2008. The Meats Evaluation Contest requires participants to identify 40 cuts of retail beef, pork and lamb. In this division of the contest, Eastern Hancock placed fourth.
They also evaluate beef and pork carcasses and wholesale cuts ranking them in a class of four. In this division, EH earned a third place ranking. Students give oral reasons to a judge justifying their reasons for placing the classes as they did and the team earned second place honors. Individual honors overall in the contest included sophomore Sarah Mueller, third place; sophomore Shannon White, ninth place; sophomore Breanna Lawyer, 13th place; and eighth grader Tabitha Parke, 19th place.
