 Carthage Pike Work to Begin

August 13, 2008 - The state has awarded Goshen-based construction company Reith-Riley the contract to do the construction on the first phase of the Carthage Pike improvement project.

According to a press release issued last week by Rush County Highways Superintendent Jerry Sitton, Reith-Riley's bid of $1,409,300 was the lowest of four bidders on the project. The second highest bid was $1,4949,716 by Dave O'Mara Contractor, followed by those of Sunesis Construction Co. ($1,590,594.48) and Milestone Contractors ($1,994,780).

The $4.26 million project, which began in 2000, will widen the road to two 11-foot lanes with four-foot shoulders that will improve drainage. Curves near Woods Campground and the Carthage Cemetery will also be realigned and a bridge near the campground will be replaced.

Sitton told The Banner on Monday that construction on Phase 1, which will run from State Road 140 to Three Mile Road, is expected to begin within 30 days. He said it's hoped that the contract for the second phase, which will run from Three Mile Road to County Road 550-West, will be awarded this fall. The contract for the third and final phase, which runs to the northern town limits of Carthage, is expected to be awarded in 2010.
