GenFest June 13-14 at County Library

June 11, 2008 - Every family has a story. Those interested in learning more about their family’s story or about regional history are invited to attend GenFest on June 13 and 14 at New Castle-Henry County Public Library. GenFest is an old-fashioned gathering of researchers doing genealogy in East Central Indiana. This free conference is presented by the library in partnership with the Henry County Historical Society Museum.

Throughout the conference, volunteers and staff with extensive research experience will help those interested in genealogy use the many resources available at the library, including computer databases and microfilm files. There will also be representatives from regional historical societies and libraries to talk to participants about genealogical research. On June 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the audiovisual area, staff from Minnetrista will present a workshop on preserving paper records.

On June 14, there will be numerous vendors of genealogical resources and supplies including Michiana History Publications, Ye Olde Genealogy Shoppe, Fun Stuff for Genealogists, Pettiford Family Research, Keesling Kin, and Stone Saver Cemetery Restoration.

As part of GenFest, the library is currently hosting a traveling exhibit about Ellis Island. Nearly half of all Americans can trace their ancestry to Ellis Island. Learn more at this interesting display which is on the upper level of the library near the reference desk.

New Castle-Henry County Public Library is expanding its collection of family histories and genealogy records. The library invites everyone with Henry County connections to write a family history, or just some brief remembrances. It is particularly important to involve older friends and family members in this effort before a whole generation of memories are lost. Part of this effort involves recording equipment recently purchased by the library which is designed to help community members record oral histories. Visit the library’s Indiana Room or reference desk for details about this project. Everyone who contributes any kind of record to the collection will be entered into a drawing for a family photograph by Captured Moments Photography and Framing.

For more information about GenFest or genealogy resources available at New Castle-Henry County Public Library, call Janet Twigg at 765-529-0362, ext. 309, or visit the GenFest link at www.nchcpl.org.
