Dan Murphy Takes Over as Carthage Town Marshal
June 4, 2008 - After nearly one month on the job in an interim capacity, the Carthage Town Council has voted to make Dan Murphy the new Carthage town marshal.
The council voted to make Murphy's appointment permanent during a special meeting on May 22. According to meeting minutes, the council agreed to pay Murphy, who will be a probationary employee for the first 60 days, $12 an hour and provide him with employee health insurance benefits.
Murphy replaces former Town Marshal Mike Onkst, who was being paid a yearly salary of $34,494 when he resigned in late April. Onkst also resigned in mid-April from his position on the town council, and Rush County Party Chairman John McCane appointed Jack Taylor to fill that vacancy.
In other business at the May 22 meeting, the council awarded a three-year contract for trash removal to Best Way (Greensburg), the company that had been providing that service. Under the new terms, town residents will pay a monthly base rate of $8.46 the first year, which will increase to $8.71 the second year and $8.97 the third. Residents will also have a fuel surcharge added to their bills.
As a way to cut costs, meeting minutes indicate the council discussed limiting employee overtime. The three employees for the town's streets and maintenance department will, until further notice, take off time as needed to keep from having overtime hours.
The council also approved a $19,458 yearly premium payment to French's Insurance. Council members suggested the premium be paid next year in quarterly installments instead of all at once.
The Carthage Town Council is scheduled to hold its regular monthly meeting at 5 p.m. today. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at Carthage Town Hall, 6 W. First St.
