Friends of the Big Blue River Plan Summer of Conservation
February 13, 2008 - The Friends of the Big Blue River (FOBBR) met Tuesday, January 29. Present were Jeff Ray, Randy Jones, Kathy Rogers and Lee Ann Wallen.
The date for the first seasonal clean up is set for Saturday, June 7, at 9 am from Henry County Road 100 S. to 200 S. This will be during National River Clean up week.
No water testing was done this quarter. However, the Henry County Health Department is also participating in the Hoosier Riverwatch program and has established a monitoring site.
Informational letters to riverside landowners regarding available habitat restoration/conservation programs are ready for mailing as soon as the district conservation position is filled for Henry County.
Ray will be ordering trees again for spring plantings. Province Pond and Summit Lake were considered as possible planting sites.
Rogers expressed interest in the group organizing a public canoe/kayak day on the river this spring. She will check on possible boat rental options.
The group would also like to meet with members of the new administration to assess how Friends of the Big Blue River might help achieve common goals regarding water quality and recreational uses of the river. Ray will explore options.
Jones reported that the Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District-sponsored 319 grant is beginning the hiring process for the grant coordinator position. An upcoming meeting with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Environmental Protection Agency will finalize the start up for the grant.
A website builder, Larry Wade of Wade Websites, has offered to design a site for FOTBBR. The next meeting will be Thursday February 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library to finalize the materials for submission to the site.
