Kevin Knott’s Statement to The Banner

November 21, 2007 - "I find it necessary to provide this response to an issue regarding our school corporation that has recently resurfaced. I want to provide clarity to the issue.

"In September 2007 I requested to review all records that in August 2007 had been requested by the Knightstown Banner. I contacted Jena Schmidt, public access person for CAB, by telephone and told her I wanted to review all the records that had been requested by the newspaper. The telephone conversation resulted in a mutual agreement that I would come to the administrative office at 8 a.m. the following morning to review the requested records. She did confirm this agreement and I was under the impression that all of the records would be available for me to review. I arrived at 8 a.m. the next morning for the previously scheduled, arranged appointment time.

"When I arrived Jena Schmidt had the redacted portions of the requested records available for me. I again stated I wanted to see the records in their entirety without redactions. She told me she didn't know where they were at. She said they could be any place in the stored records section of the administration building. I told her that if these records were located, I wanted to see them in their entirety.

"I left after reviewing the available redacted records that day with the understanding that if the unredacted records were located, Jena Schmidt would contact me so I could review them. I would expect her, as an employee of the corporation, to follow up and contact me pertaining to the request I had made if the records became available.

"I feel it is my responsibility to have pursued this matter as I did, and Jena Schmidt, the public access person for the school corporation, to provide the information I have already formally requested. As an elected official of the Board of Trustees of CAB, I do believe it is within the normal scope of my duties to be allowed to review any and all records pertaining to the corporation. It is necessary to do this in order for me to make informed knowledgeable decisions and to gain a historical perspective related to previously formulated decisions that influence the direction and practice of the school corporation."
