Henry County Library Hosting Dance Troupe

November 7, 2007 - New Castle-Henry County Public Library welcomes the Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance for an entertaining showcase of authentic dances from the 1920s. The dance troupe will perform in the library’s auditorium at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 10. There is no charge for the program, which is a part of The Big Read.

The Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance is credited with the flowering of vintage dance in North America. Founded in 1981 by Richard Powers, the organization has sparked interest in historic social dance throughout the world. The Flying Cloud is dedicated to the preservation, performance and teaching of historic ballroom dances and music.

The Academy maintains a thriving vintage dance community providing opportunities for dancers of all levels to enjoy the magic of authentic historical dance and other related traditions. We share our love of dance through classes, performance, and the re-creation of elegant evenings of dancing in period settings.

The troupe has carefully reconstructed dances from the 1920s, and will incorporate music, costuming, and etiquette during their performance at the library. A sampling of dances will include the Tango, Foxtrot, One-Step, Big Apple, and the Charleston.

The performance by the Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance is one of many programs offered during The Big Read to capture the era of the jazz age described in the book. The Big Read is designed to encourage Henry County to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Free books and readers guides are available at locations around Henry County including all public libraries in the county.

The Big Read is an initiative of the NEA in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Arts Midwest designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read is made possible through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Henry County Community Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and Friends of the Library.
