 Blue River Friends End Season

October 31, 2007 - The Friends of the Big Blue River met Thursday October 18th at the library. Present were Shelia Marion, Kathy Rogers, Jeff Ray, Jon Creek, Lee Ann Wallen and Randy Jones.

Ray reported that two boat loads of garbage, including 10 tires and 25 bags of trash, were collected from the Day of Caring cleanup on September 11. Several tireless and brave volunteers from Ameriana Bank joined with us and the group managed to "win" the dirty T-shirt award.

The Soil and Water Conservation District will be sending out letters to landowners adjoining the river to inform them of cost share programs available to renew and restore habitat and riparian areas.

Ray will follow up with the waste water treatment plant as to the progress on control measures for floatables which dump into the river during rains as well as the status of the long-term CSO control plan which has been under active review by IDEM.

Marion and Rogers reported on a bank cleanup of Westwood park conducted using kayaks. Several bags of trash and one tire were collected.

The county health department now has a trained Riverwatch person and will be doing monthly testing at several sites on the river.

The next meeting will be the annual end of year chili supper to be held at Wallen's on Thursday, November 8, at 6 p.m.
