Friday’s Meeting to Determine Fate of Positions, Programs at CAB

May 23, 2007 - The Charles A. Beard School Board's vote on a recommendation to eliminate five positions within the school corporation is expected to come during a special midday meeting this Friday.

Superintendent David McGuire recommended to the board last month that three teaching and two non-teaching positions be cut for the 2007-20078 school year: vocal music teacher for high school and intermediate school; one high school business teacher; a gifted and talented teacher at the intermediate school; an elementary school social worker; and a mental health counselor for the high school and intermediate school. Citing what he termed a "significant decline in revenue" in CAB's General Fund, McGuire said the cuts could save CAB between $185,000 and $200,000.

For more than a month, the recommendation to cut vocal music teacher Jan Crouch's position has drawn a steady stream of criticism from students, parents and others in the community, including hundreds who signed a petition opposing cuts to music and other arts programs. During the board's meetings on April 17 and May 15, several people spoke against this proposed cut.

The board also heard opposition at last week's meeting against the recommendation to cut the social worker position. Noting that nearly half of her school's students come from low-income households, Kennard Elementary teacher Janet Sparks said it's "a blessing" to have a social worker available to address the emotional needs of these and other students - issues she said teacher are often unable to handle.

This Friday's special meeting is scheduled to begin at noon and will be held at CAB's Central Office, 345 N. Adams St., Knightstown. Persons who want to address the board at this meeting are asked to call the Central Office at 345-5101 before Friday to be placed on the agenda.
