Tri BPA Students Head for Nationals
April 11, 2007 - Eighteen members of Tri Jr-Sr High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) attended the Indiana State Leadership Conference on March 4-6 in Indianapolis.
Abbie Howell and Jennifer Marshall both placed in the top three spots in two categories and are now qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in New York City on May 9-13.
Howell placed first in Advanced Interview Skills and placed second in Human Resource Management. Marshall placed second in Presentation Management Individual and third place in Advanced Interview Skills. She has also proven her leadership skills by serving as the president of the Indiana Business Professionals of America this past year. BPA celebrated their fortieth anniversary this year, so there have only been forty presidents. BPA began as Office Education Association and is a national, vocational organization devoted to teaching students business and leadership skills that can be applied to their chosen careers. During the national event, Marshall will represent Indiana in several capacities. She will serve as the Head Voting Delegate for Indiana and will be the Indiana state flag bearer during the opening ceremonies. She will also conduct Indiana state caucuses to elect next year’s national officers and she will attend a breakfast for all state presidents.
Howell and Marshall have achieved status as the best in Indiana in their individual competitive events. They began by winning at the district level of competition, qualifying them for the state level. At the state conference, the top three winners from the twelve districts compete to achieve the distinction as the best in Indiana.
Also attending the national conference will be Jennifer Trevino. She was elected to serve as the Vice-President of Public Relations for next year on the State Officer Leadership Team. She will be attending the NCL as a Leadership Academy Cadet & Intern.
Other results from the state competition included:
• Statesman Torch Award – Tiffany Moore and Abbie Howell
• Third place in Global Marketing Team – Elles Niessen, Jordan Proctor, Aprill Schelle, Jillian Yanos
• Sixth place in Prepared Speech – Sarah Loyd
• Fifth place in Economic Research Project Team – Chris Wilkey, Scott Oliver, DJ Sparks, Mark Wenning
• Seventh place in Interview Skills – Elles Niessen
• Seventh place in Presentation Management Individual – Jackie Trevino
• Eighth place in Prepared Speech – Jillian Yanos
• Ninth place in Extemporaneous Speech
• Thirteenth place in Medical Office Procedures – Aprill Schelle
The Tri High Chapter also received two awards for being an active chapter. The chapter was honored with the Quality Chapter Distinction and the Community Action award. The chapter is headed by BPA advisor Kathy Gibson, a business teacher at Tri.
