 Girls Nearly Upset #1 Rushville in 1983


The state’s number one ranked girls basketball team escaped Knightstown with a narrow 44-41 win in girls basketball. Shari Alexander led the Lady Panthers with 22 points and Rhonda Barton scored 14 and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Lady Panthers won their season opener two days earlier by crushing Centerville 40-15. The Bulldogs’ slow style of play kept the score low, but eventually Knightstown pulled away by getting 16 points from Alexander and 14 more from Barton.

Tracy Barton had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knightstown junior varsity girls to their first win of the season over Centerville. Ellen Hager and Denise Dick scored eight points apiece.

Knightstown’s freshman basketball team shot over 70 percent from the field and won their season opener against Blue River 62-54. The young Panthers nailed 24-of-34 field goals in the contest. Billy Jones led a balanced attack with 18 points, nailing 6-of-7 free throws in the process. Greg Howard scored 16 points, Todd Cordle had 13, Scott Van Hoy had seven points and nine rebounds, and Kent Armstrong added four points.

Knightstown’s 8th grade basketball team defeated Tri 32-26. Brett Walker was the top scorer with 10 points, while Scott Knepley added eight.


This year’s Knightstown Panther basketball team roster includes Art Rose, Greg Whitfield, Bill Wasson, Andy Johnson, Al Gatmaitan, John Wright, Jeff Roland, Kirk Hochstedler, Tom Kidd, Richard Wright and Bill Miller. Duane Queener will again be assisted by Bill Bergmann.

The junior varsity team will consist of Josh White, David Lewis, Ricky Walters, Brett Wilfong, John Peters, David Stacy, Troy Doubman, Jack Tague, Barry Stacy, Eric Barnes and Doug Abrams.

The Panther wrestling team includes Chris Gillam, Mark White, Mark Smoot, Steve Mackey, Verle Palmer, Steve Brock, Brian Ward, Jeff Brown, Tim Wright, Eric Moore, John Gross, Rodney Williams, Mike Lewis, Mark Heim, Kurt Easton, Greg Hahn, Randy Hooker, Kirk McCord, Mark Todd, John White, Jeff Jackson, Danny Lukens, Gary Kiser and Tracy Lowhorn.

Eastern Hancock’s varsity basketball team includes Bob McDaniel, Steve Mayer, Dale Macy, Joe Rhodes, Jon Cain, John Jordan, Larry Spegal, Chris Snider, Joe Martin and Doug Rodebeck.


The Carthage junior high basketball team won its season opener over St. Mary’s last week, 42-17. Coach Bud King got balanced scoring from his club as Doug Roland and Greg Whitfield scored 10 points apiece. Jack Grizzell and Chuck Floyd both tallied eight markers. David Tumilty kept the bench occupied.

Great things are expected from Knightstown’s varsity wrestling team. The squad has 33 members, including several sectional winners from last season. Team members include Tim Wright, Clark Crail, Harold Mohler, Bob Jones, Jeff Brown, Tom Edwards, Jeff Wright, Jeff Firestone, Frank Anderson, Steve White, Kevin Pearson, Doug Johnson, Dave Kilmer, John Ottinger, Greg Carrow, Trent Pitcher, Randy Plank, Pat O’Neil, Greg Firestone, Mark Todd, John White, Jeff Jackson, Steve Carrow, Bob Lines, Joe Beavers, Perry Gorman, John Turpin, John Strader, Dave Milton, Brent Vogle, Chuck Butler and Buddy Grimm.
