Return of Gene Bundy Sparked 1967 Panther Basketball Win
Knightstown Home Optimist Club held its annual Tri-Star basketball contest. In the girls division, second place winners were Becky Vanosdol, Michelle Whitesitt, Jenni Beaver, Kristi Rhodes, Heather Whitesitt, Rae Jo Fox. First place winners were Stephanie Jones, Emily Sloan, Monica Weimer, Mindi Hopkins, Julie Estridge and Jeanette Price. In the boys division, second place winners were Aaron Collins, Carl Baker, Danny Cupp, David True, Chris Bundy and Doug Arthur. First place winners were Matt Roberts, Mike Kidwell, Matt Hooker, Shawn Brown, Jeff Grizzell and Aaron Ratliff.
Knightstown’s freshman “A” basketball team this year includes manager Bobby Grimm, Todd Cordle, Billy Jones, Kent Armstrong, Brian Rawlins, Greg Howard, Scott Peyton, Mark Moss, Scott Van Hoy, Erikk Knapp and Ronnie Jackson. “B” team members are Brad Burton, Scott Gulley, Jason Jackson, Joe Magee, Brian Rawlins, Rick Mills, Alan Manche, Eric Rogers and Larry Hopkins. The team is coached by Dan Clevenger.
Knightstown’s eighth grade basketball team includes Mike Simon, Eric Kopp, Greg Geise, Randy Miller, Charles Fort, Steve Walker, Darren Basicker, Kevin Isaacs, Scott Knepley, Bill Goodman, Randy Gosser, Matt Price, Shawn Adkins, Rodney Littleton, Brett Walker, Tim Welch, Ronnie Conley, Charles Hamby and Mike Johnson. The team is coached by Elwood Wegesin.
The seventh grade basketball team includes Chris Roberts, Bobby Hamblin, Kevin White, Mike Hooker, Brett South, Tom Welsh, Chris Bundy, Greg Young, Paul Lawson, Harvey McGuire, Scott Roberts, Scott Lawson, Aaron Ratliff, Ty Hunt and Scott Stroud. They are coached by Tim Leonard.
Kim Beavers, Rhonda Barton and Shari Alexander each scored ten points to lead the Knightstown girls basketball team to its fourth straight victory, 39-28 over Cambridge City.
With Tim Estridge and Wade Stewart both out with injuries, Knightstown’s boys basketball was no match for 13-1 New Palestine, losing 65-47.
Eastern Hancock won the Big Blue River Conference holiday tournament by sweeping Tri, Knightstown and Morristown. Big center Bud Gray was the tourney MVP, getting 28 points against the Titans. Gray then had 25 points and 19 rebounds in a 62-60 win over the Panthers. He had 28 points in the finale against the Yellow Jackets.
Six players reached double figures in Knightstown’s preliminary round thumping over Morristown. Brent Magee had 14 points and 15 rebounds, Galen Thomas scored 13, Russell Cleek and Jerry Brown each had 11, while Kevin Roland and Jerry Brown scored 10 apiece.
Bob Powers and Chris Smith led Eastern Hancock to a sweep in the conference tournament, leading the junior varsity team to the title as well.
John Rucker was the leading scorer in both games as the Carthage Raiders picked up wins number eight and nine of the season. Dave Hunt and Warren Nigh scored 13 points apiece in the Raiders’ victory over the Spiceland Stingers.
Gene Bundy returned to the Knightstown line-up for the first time since suffering an injury during football season, and his presence was a welcome sight. He scored 22 points, but the Panthers lost a heart-breaker to ranked New Palestine, 70-69.
Eastern Hancock wrestlers Bob Davis, Eddie Robertson, Pat Brizendine and Dan Stanley have finished the first half of the season unbeaten.
Joe Tompkins, Darrell Keesling, Mike Jarrett, Greg Ellis were the leading scorers for the Panther reserves in their loss to the Dragons.
