Panthers Start New Season with New Coach Bergmann in 1984

The young Knightstown Panthers will take to the floor for their season opener this week with a new coach. Bill Bergmann will be leading the Panthers in the opener against Mt. Vernon. The team returns just one starter from last year, junior Mike Wade. Other team members include David Bundy, Billy Jones, Andy Moore, Wade Stewart, Gary Duff, Brian Chapple, Ron Morgan, James Brummett and Tim Estridge.

Knightstown girls’ basketball coach Becky Freeman lashed out at what she called “inadequate facilities” after her team lost its season opener to Rushville 58-44 last week. Freeman said the lack of practice time was hurting her team because the school corporation has just one gymnasium that all of the teams must share.

Knightstown rebounded from that loss and defeated Centerville 48-29. Rhonda Barton led the way with 14 points. Lisa Koors and April Helms added eight points each, while Amanda Westerfeld scored six, Tracy Barton five, freshman Dawn Redmond three, Jeanna Wright and Ellen Hager two apiece.

Knightstown’s freshman basketball team lost its season opener to Blue River last week. Shawn Adkins scored 16 points to lead the young Panthers. Scott Knepley had seven and Rodney Littleton scored three.

The Lady Panther junior varsity basketball team lost to Centerville and Rushville last week. Sheri Tinkle led the girls with six points, while Lura Howard and Mardina Marsh scored four apiece. Kelly Roberts led the team in rebounds.

Jim Perry Jr. won the Royals Hylands Golf Club championship, while Pat Bundy won the ladies’ title and Aaron Ratliff won the junior title. Other top finishers in the championship flight were Ted Skillman, Mike Wyatt, Rob Hall, Gene Gardner, Brent Magee, Marv Heim and Jerry Nicholas.

Top finishers in the junior flight included Brett South, Chad Leakey and Blake Heim. Top finishers in the ladies’ division included Sally Brown, Marilyn Glisson, Mary Peacock and Dee Jones.

This year’s Knightstown Panther basketball team roster includes Art Rose, Greg Whitfield, Bill Wasson, Andy Johnson, Al Gatmaitan, John Wright, Jeff Roland, Kirk Hochstedler, Tom Kidd, Richard Wright and Bill Miller. Duane Queener will again be assisted by Bill Bergmann.

The junior varsity team will consist of Josh White, David Lewis, Ricky Walters, Brett Wilfong, John Peters, David Stacy, Troy Doubman, Jack Tague, Barry Stacy, Eric Barnes and Doug Abrams.
