Genealogical Gleanings 115 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the March 22 column. (Note: There was no genealogy column published in last week’s Mar. 29 issue of the Banner.)

Following the Sannons family and their Swartz relatives (detailed in last column) is the rented home of widow Ida O. Bradway at 229 S. Madison. The former Miss Ida Cook was born in Ind. about 1865. She was married to George T. Bradway in Henry Co. on July 10, 1889. Mrs. Bradway has one married daughter and three children who are still single living at home. Her daughter Gladys L. Warrick was born about 1900 and married Jesse E. Warrick in Henry Co. on May 8, 1919. Jesse, however, is not enumerated as living in the home. Other children living at home include son Loren E. (b. abt. 1892), Eugene (b. abt. 1895), and Viola F. (b. abt. 1903). Eugene is employed as section worker at the railroad and Viola works as an operator at the telephone company.

Shown next at 228 S. Madison is Lewis W. Huber (last name is difficult to read – might also be Shiber or ?). Lewis is a widower. He was born in Ind. about 1863. He is a foreman working at the railroad.

The Small family is listed next but shown also as living at 228 S. Madison as renters. Walter T. Small was born in Ind. about 1889. He is shown as being married but no wife is listed. He has two sons living with him – Thurman L. (b. abt. 1911) and Murray E. (b. abt. 1915).

The James family follows at the home they own at 237 S. Madison. William C. James was born in Ind. about 1859. He works as a machinist at a factory. His wife, Mary R. James, was born in Ind. about 1862.

The Forbes family is listed next at 302 W. Pine Street. George C. Forbes was born in Michigan about 1863. Mr. Forbes is an agent at the interurban station. His wife, Ida C. Forbes, was born in Michigan about 1860. They have two children still living at home. Their son, Donald W. Forbes, was born in Michigan about 1892. He works as a machinist at a factory. Their daughter, Verda R. Forbes, was born in Ind. about 1897. Also living in the home is George’s mother Rose E. Forbes. She was born in Canada about 1841. She immigrated to the United States in 1856 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1858.

The Vanoustran family is shown next at the home they rent at 326 W. Pine. William Vanoustran was born in Michigan about 1861. He works as a farm laborer. On Feb 27, 1898 in Hancock Co. he married Ida Belle Robinson. She was born in Ind. about 1884. There are several children living in the home but it is unclear which are children of Ida’s or children from a previous marriage of William’s. The children are: Maggie (b. abt. 1903), Earl L. (b. abt. 1899), Lester (b. abt. 1904), and Beulah M. (b. abt. 1910). Also living in the home is a married daughter, Effie P. Craig, and her son Walter M. Craig. Effie was born about 1900 and her son was born about 1918. (Effie’s husband is not listed as living in the home.)

Genealogical Gleanings 116 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the April 5 column.

Following the Vanoustran family (detailed last week) at 326 W. Pine is the home rented by the mulatto family headed by James Goins at 315 W. Pine (might also be 305 W. Pine). Mr. Goins was born in Ind. about 1880. He is employed as a street laborer. On Aug. 5, 1915 in Henry Co. he married Mabel Roberts. She was born in Ind. about 1890. Also living in the home is James’ brother Charles Goins. Charles was born in Ind. about 1878. He is also a street laborer. Joseph Goins, James’ father, is living in the home too. Joseph was born in Virginia about 1845. Emery E. Everett, listed as James’ stepson, is also listed. Emery was born in Ind. about 1905 and he works as a woodchopper.

Mrs. Anna Carter, a widow, rents the next home shown at 301 W. Pine. Anna was born in Ind. about 1871. Also living in the home are Anna’s brothers, William H. Gaden and Walter Gaden, who are both factory workers. William was born in Ind. about 1894 and Walter was born in Ind. about 1903.

Dorra K. Sluth, a divorced mother of one, owns the next home listed at 217 W. Pine. Dorra was born in Ind. about 1877. Only her son, Orpheus B. Sluth, is living in the home with her. He was born in Ind. about 1902. He is employed as a laborer at a factory.

Only Alonzo’s daughter, Minnie Forbes, is living in the home with him. Minnie was born in Ind. about 1866. She is a widow but no marriage record was found to indicate who her husband had been.

Widower James M. Powers owns the next home at 105 W. Pine where he lives alone. James was born in Ind. about 1852. He owns and operates his own shoe store.

The Armstrong family rents the next home shown at 115 W. Pine. James Courtney Armstrong was born in Ind. about 1894. He is employed as a general electrician. On Oct. 9, 1916 in Henry Co. he married Gertrude R. Powers (possibly the daughter of James Powers listed previously?). She was born in Ind. about 1892. They have one son, James C., who was born about 1917.

Widow Sarah E. Williams owns the home listed next at 106 W. Pine. Sarah was born in Ind. about 1849. Grace J. Hall, shown as a servant, is the only other person listed as living in the home. Grace was born in Ind. about 1877 and is divorced.

The Risk family owns the next home at 116 W. Pine. Charlie M. Risk was born in Ind. about 1866. He is a grocery retail merchant. On Nov. 30, 1893 in Henry Co. he married Susie McClammer. She was born in Ind. about 1866.

The Rounds family is shown next in the home they own at 126 W. Pine. James H. Rounds was born in Ind. about 1869. He is the editor at the newspaper. On Sept. 26, 1895 in Henry Co. he married Mary P. Welborn. She was born in Ind. about 1873. They have three children at home including Elizabeth D. (b. abt. 1900), James W. (b. abt. 1905), and Joseph B. (b. abt. 1910). Elizabeth works as a stenographer and James W. is a salesman at a drug store.

Genealogical Gleanings 117 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the April 12 column. (Note: there was no column published in the Apr. 19 or Apr. 26 issues.)

Following the Rounds family at 126 W. Pine (detailed in last column) is the home owned by the Jacksons at 125 W. Pine. George H. Jackson was born in Ind. about 1853. Mr. Jackson is a farmer. He married Mary L. Duncan on Jan. 15, 1913 in Henry Co. She was born in Ind. about 1873.

The Palmer family rents the next home listed at 142 W. Pine. John W. Palmer was born in Pennsylvania about 1857. Mr. Palmer is a sawyer at a saw mill. His wife, Anna H., was born in Pennsylvania about 1867. Their daughter Lavanche H. Palmer is also living in the home. She was born in Ohio about 1890 and she is employed as a saleslady at a grocery.

The Ramsey family is listed next and though they are shown living on West Pine, there is no house number given. James Ramsey was born in Ind. about 1853. He works as a ditcher on a farm. His wife, Ellen N., was born in Kentucky about 1864.

The Bascher family rents the home shown next, also on West Pine with no house number. Henry Baseler was born in Missouri about 1880. He is a manager at a paper company. His wife, Elizabeth B., was born in Pennsylvania about 1880. They have three children living in the home – Mary (b. about 1904), Virgina B. (b. about 1908) and Thomas H. (b. about 1910).

The Bradway family is listed next. They own a home at 122 S. Harrison. Ernest Bradway was born in Ind. about 1894. Mr. Bradway is the Town Marshal. On Nov. 24, 1915 in Henry Co. Ernest married Clara B. Montgomery. She was born in Ind. about 1894. They have one child, Doris E., who was about 1917.

The Boyer family is enumerated next in the home they rent at 114 S. Harrison. George F. Boyer was born in Ohio about 1871. He works as a cabinet maker in a factory. On Jan. 24, 1900 in Shelby Co. he married Clara M. Brink. She was born in Ind. about 1872. They have three children living in the home – Anna L. (b. about 1901), Fredrick S. (b. about 1903) and Carl J. (b. about 1904). Anna works as a seamstress in a factory; Fredrick is employed as a draftsman at a factory; and Carl works in a factory as a painter.

The Stoten family is listed next in the home they rent at 105 W. Jackson. Marion J. Stoten was born in Ind. about 1897. He works as a laborer in a factory. His wife, Ruby, was born in Ind. about 1900.

The Deck family is shown next in the home they own at 104 W. Jackson. Ernest F. Deck, son of John and Viola (Tiggart) Deck was born in Ind. about 1891. On May 15, 1915 in Hancock Co. he married Leone Moffitt. She was born in Ind. about 1894.

Genealogical Gleanings 118 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the May 3 issue (there was no column published in the May 10 issue).

Following the Deck family at 104 W. Jackson (detailed last week) is the home at 130 W. Jackson rented by Mrs. Bertha Wagoner, a widow, and her children. The former Bertha Miller was born in Ind. about 1875. She married Richard R. Wagoner on Oct. 25, 1897 in Henry Co. Their children still living at home include Ellen M. (b. about 1901), Rachel L. (b. about 1908) and Richard L. (b. 1917). Bertha earns a living as a saleslady at a millinery store. Her daughter Ellen is employed as a stenographer at a department store.

The McCorkle family follows at 129 W. Jackson. Joseph McCorkle was born in Ind. about 1857. He works as a teamster for the city. Joseph married Florence E. DeGolyer on July 2, 1890 in Henry Co. Florence was born in Pennsylvania about 1866. They have three children living at home including Clinton R. (b. about 1894), Eva M. (b. about 1898) and Ethyl L. (b. about 1899). Clinton is employed as a drill man at a factory and both Eva and Ethyl work as telephone operators.

Mrs. Eliza Richardson, a widow, is listed next at 225 W. Jackson Street. Eliza was born in Ind. about 1858. She lives alone.

The Cox family is shown after Mrs. Richardson at the home they own at 317 W. Jackson. John M. Cox was born in Ind. about 1870. He is a farmer. On Apr. 9, 1895 in Henry Co. he married Elzora Hallowell. She was born in Ind. about 1872. They have three children living at home – Floyd M. (b. about 1901), Alice (b. about 1906) and Carl (b. about 1911). Also living in the home is John’s aunt Jane R. Haigh. She was born in Maryland about 1840.

The Veach family is enumerated next at the home they rent at 104 Hill Avenue. Alva Veach was born in Ind. about 1871. He is employed as a tool driller at a gas well. His wife, Mary S. Veach, was born in Ohio about 1878. They have one child, 11-month old Ronald B. Veach, who was born in Ohio in 1919.

Mr. Ira Armstrong is listed next, but apparently living at the same address as the Veach family as no house number is given. Ira was born in Ind. about 1862. He works as a general painter. He is divorced.

Mrs. Hattie S. Earnest, a widow, and her family own the next residence listed at 324 Hill Ave. The former Miss Hattie Stuart was born in Ind. about 1858. She married William R. Ernest on May 8, 1894 in Henry Co. Living in the home with Hattie is her daughter, Susie E., and her husband. Susie was born in Ind. about 1898. She married Ralph S. Ward on April 9, 1918 in Henry Co. Ralph was born in Ind. about 1895. He works as a mail clerk at the railroad and Susie is a school teacher.

Genealogical Gleanings 119 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the May 17 column (there was no column published in the May 24 issue).

Following the Earnest family (detailed in the last column on May 17) is the home rented by Mr. and Mrs. Morgan at 26 McCullum Street. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan rent the next home listed at 26 McCullum Street. Rowland Morgan was born in Ind. about 1897. He works as a bookkeeper at a bank. His wife, Ruth H., was born in Kentucky about 1899. They do not have any children at this time.

The Fredrick family is listed next as living on McCullum Street but no house number is given. Emory Fredrick was born in Ind. about 1878. He works as a blacksmith in a shop. On Mar. 1, 1901 in Henry Co. he married Emma J. Alexander. She was born in Ind. about 1884. They have four children living at home including Willie E. (b. about 1902), Ruby M. (b. about 1904), Lewis A. (b. about 1907) and Florence A. (b. about 1911). The youngest kids are still in school but Willie is employed as a telegraph operator.

Two Newby families are enumerated after the Fredricks. The first Newby home is at 105 W. Clay Street. Leonidas Perry Newby was born in Ind. in 1856. At age 64, Mr. Perry is now president of a bank though he had been very successful and well-known as an attorney. On Dec. 20, 1876 in Henry Co. he married Mary Elizabeth Breckenridge. She was born in Ind. about 1858.

Floyd J. Newby and family own the next home at 115 W. Clay Street. Floyd was born in Ind. about 1879. He is a general practice attorney. On Nov 3, 1904 in Putnam Co. he married Mary H. Lewis. She was born in Ind. about 1883. They have two children living at home – Lewis P. (b. about 1908) and Robert (b. about 1910).

The Barker family owns the next home shown at 123 W. Clay. Claude N. Barker was born in Ind. about 1889. Mr. Barker is a clothing merchant. His wife, Crystal M., was born in Illinois about 1892. They do not have any children.

Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett own the next home at 129 W. Clay. Claud Bartlett was born in Ind. about 1862. He is a medical physician. His wife, Carrie, was born in Ind. about 1876.

Mrs. Elizabeth Heritage owns the next home at 133 W. Clay. Elizabeth was born in Ind. about 1849. She lives alone.

The Hill family follows with the home they rent at 135 W. Clay. Walter B. Hill was born in Ind. about 1869. Walter is an operator of a farm. His wife, Susan F., was born in Ind. about 1873. They have one child at home. Edgar N. Hill was born in Ind. about 1903.

Mrs. Cora E. Mattix, a widow, rents the next home listed at 213 W. Clay. Mrs. Mattix was born in Ind. about 1883. She is employed as a “flag woman” at the railroad. She has one son, Ralph L., living at home. Ralph was born in Ind. about 1907. Also living in the home is Cora’s son-in-law, Bert Rhoades. He is listed as a widower. Bert was born in Ind. about 1893. He’s a farmer.

Genealogical Gleanings 120 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the May 31 column.

Following the Mattix family (detailed last week) is the home owned by Mrs. Mandy Brooks, a widow. Though the home is listed on West Clay Street, no house number is given. Mandy was born in Ind. about 1840. Her son, Charlie M. Brooks, also lives in the home. He was born in Ind. about 1885. He works as a plasterer.

The Hilberts rent the next home shown at 303 W. Clay. Emery A. Hilbert was born in Ind. about 1873. He is a stationery engineer. His wife, Fern B., was born in Ind. about 1886. They have one son living at home. Wayne V. Hilbert was born in Ind. about 1904. (Note: their last name might also be Hilbut – census is difficult to read)

The Lakin family follows. They rent a home on Clay Street also but no house number is given. John W. Lakin was born in Ind. about 1863. He is a manager of a farm. On Sept. 2, 1893 in Henry Co. he married Minnie S. Judge. She was born in Ind. about 1872.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis are shown next at the home they own at 411 W. Clay. Ramond Clarence Lewis was born in Ind. about 1879. He works as a driver of a gas wagon. On Dec. 23, 1919 in Henry Co. he married Myrtle Wales. She was born in Ind. about 1878.

The Junkens live next at the home they own at 417 W. Clay. Henry A. Junkens was born in Ind. about 1847. His wife, Elizabeth R., was born in Ind. about 1844. They have one son living at home. Edward H. Junkens was born in Ind. about 1877. He married Rosa Miller on May 24, 1896 in Henry Co. but they have since divorced. Both Henry and Edward work as gas station fillers/attendants.

The Copper family follows at 423 W. Clay, a home they own. David F. Copper was born in Ind. about 1856. He is a foreman at a factory. His wife, Dora J., was born in Ind. about 1862. They daughter, Bessie L. Reeves, and her two daughters also live in the home. Bessie first married Henry V. Wink on Apr. 1, 1903 in Henry Co. and they had two daughters, Elizabeth E. Wink (b. about 1905) and Kathryn D. Wink (b. about 1907). Then, on Apr. 12, 1910 Bessie married Solomon V. Wink in Henry Co. It is unclear what happened to either of the Wink men, but on Bess married Munson Reeves on Nov. 28, 1917 in Henry Co. Bessie is listed as married in this 1920 census but her husband is not enumerated as living with the rest of the family.

The White family is listed next at the home they own at 429 W. Clay. Hiram F. White was born in Ind. about 1862. Hiram is a stock buyer. On Mar. 3, 1897 in Henry Co. he married Ella M. Kerns. She was born in Ohio about 1868. They have one daughter, Florence G. White, living at home. She was born in Ind. about 1900. Also living in the home is Abigail E. Powers, a roomer. Abigail was born in Ohio about 1846.

Genealogical Gleanings 121 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the June 7 column. (Note: It is my understanding that today’s Main Street was actually Clay Street at one time.)

Following the White family is the home owned by the Jackson family at 531 W. Clay Street. David M. Jackson was born in Ind. on Nov. 11, 1855. He works at a fence factory. On Feb. 27, 1915 in Marion Co. he married Minnie E. Bartle. She was born in Pennsylvania on Sept. 29, 1882. They have two children together – David O. (b. about 1915) and Leonard M. (b. 1919).

The Holloway family is listed next at the home they own at 511 W. Clay Street. Elmer E. Holloway was born in ind. about 1863. He works as an organ builder. His wife, Alice H., was born in Vermont about 1856. Their daughter Dorothia was born in Ind. about 1900. She is a librarian.

The Hatfield family follows in the home they rent at 508 Clay Street. Frank H. Hatfield was born in West Virginia about 1861. He is a salesman at a lumber company. On Apr. 23, 1890 in Henry Co. he married Flora B. Furgason. She was born in Ind. about 1868. They have one son living at home. Wayon C. Hatfield was born in Ind. about 1900. He works as a draftsman at a factory.

The Jolly family owns the next residence at 416 W. Clay Street. Walter E. Jolly was born in Ind. about 1883. He is druggist at his own store. On July 6, 1910 in Henry Co. he married Lillian Edna Wink. She was born in Ind. about 1887. They have two sons at home. Louis E. Jolly was born about 1913 and Harry D. Jolly was born about 1914.

Mr. and Mrs. McMahan rent the next place at 407 W. Clay. Charles H. McMahan was born in Ind. about 1861. He is a tailor working in his own shop. His wife, Hattie, was born in Ind. about 1859.

Mr. and Mrs. White are shown next at the home they own at 318 W. Clay Street. Emory E. White was born in Ind. about 1867. He is a farm operator. On Oct. 4, 1899 in Wayne Co. he married Blanche Bilby. She was born about 1868.

The Carroll family is listed next at they own at 104 W. Clay Street. Aaron E. Carroll was born in Ohio about 1854. He is vice-president at a bank. On Dec. 11, 1878 in Henry Co. he married Emma B. Williams. She was born in Ind. about 1860. They have one son living at home. Leland E. Carroll, now a college student, was born about 1896.

Eva A. Thomas and Alba M. Thomas own the next home shown at 116 W. Clay Street. Eva was born in Ind. about 1872. Alba was born in Ind. about 1866. Neither are employed.

Genealogical Gleanings 122 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the June 14 column. (Note: It is my understanding that today’s Main Street was actually Clay Street at one time.)

Following the home of Eva Thomas at 116 W. Clay Street is the home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Deem at 128 W. Clay. Thomas B. Deem was born in Ind. about 1851. He is president at the gas company. On Aug. 1, 1879 in Henry Co. he married Martha G. “Mattie” Hall. She was born in Ind. about 1853.

Mrs. Margaret F. Veach, a widow, owns the next home shown at 305 W. Clay. Margaret was born in Ind. about 1851.

The Winks own the next home at 130 W. Clay. Lewis C. Wink was born in Ind. about 1851. He sells music books, mostly by traveling outside of the area. On Sept. 25, 1877 in Hamilton Co. he married Nettie M. Ellis. She was born in Ohio about 1862.

Ms. Emma Weaver is shown next in the home she rents at 24 McCullum Street. Emma was born in Ind. about 1859. She is single.

The Shultz family follows in the home they rent at 32 McCullum. Mrs. Hazel B. Shultz, a widow, was born in Ind. about 1888. The former Miss Hazel B. Haywood married Raymond Shultz on Nov. 1, 1906 in Hancock Co. She has two children. Weldon R. Shultz was born in Ind. about 1908 and Reginald F. Shultz was born in Ind. about 1910.  Also living in the home is Hazel’s mother-in-law, Sophia Shultz. She was born in Pennsylvania about 1837.

Pennsylvania native James S. Bartle owns the next home listed at 38 McCullum. He was born about 1875 and is employed as a contractor at an oil field. He married Stella M. Dalrymple on Sept. 3, 1898 in Henry Co. They have two sons at home. Ronald L. Bartle was born in Ind. about 1901 and James L. Bartle was born about 1903.

The Vancleaves rent the next home at 131 McCullum. Louise L. Vancleave was born in Virginia about 1865. She earns a living as doing housework for a private family. Her daughter, Eleanor Vancleave, also lives in the home. She was born in Illinois about 1887. She works as a cook at a hotel. Both women are divorced.

Mrs. Erma Brown lives alone in the next home listed at 125 McCullum, where she is a renter. Erma was born in Ind. about 1865.

Mr. and Mrs. Beers rent the next home at 137 McCullum. John Beers was born in Kentucky on Feb. 12, 1897. He earns a living as a junk dealer. On Mar. 30, 1918 in Wayne Co. he married Myrtle E. Williams. She was born in Ind. on Mar. 30, 1918. They have one child. Their daughter Maria was born in Ind. about a year and a half ago.

Genealogical Gleanings 123 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the June 21 column.

Following the Beers family (detailed last week) is the home owned by the Barker family at 130 N. McCullum Street. William S. Barker was born about 1854 in New York. He is a physician. His wife, Courtney J. Barker, was born about 1855 in Ohio. They have one son, William W., living at home. He was born in Ohio about 1879 and he is also a medical physician. Also living in the home is their widowed daughter, Nell B. Knapp, and her son, Marion H. Knapp. Nell was born in Ohio about 1881 and her son was born in Ohio about 1902. Nell is employed as a saleswoman selling typewriter supplies.

The Newby family is listed next at the home they own at 222 N. McCullum. Charles L. Newby was born in Ind. about 1868. He is a carpenter at a factory. His wife, Ida M., was born in Ind. about 1874. They have a son and daughter living at home. Their son, Morris H., was born in Ind. about 1900. He is employed as a florist at a greenhouse. Their daughter, Margaret M., was born in Ind. about 1905.

Following the Newby family is the home of the Morris family at their home at 309 N. McCullum. David Grant Morris was born in Ind. about 1863.  He works on a farm. On Mar. 4, 1893 in Shelby Co. he married Lola Belle Headlee. She was born in Ind. about 1878. They have six children living at home including Della B. (b. about 1895), Stella A. George B. Bundy owns the next home listed at 312 N. McCullum. George was born in Ind. about 1856. He works as a “house mover” and is listed as divorced. Living with him is his sister, Martha E. “Mattie” Perkey, who was born in Ind. about 1868. She had married William Perkey on June 6, 1886 in Henry Co. but they are now divorced.

Mr. and Mrs. Collins rent the next home listed at 324 N. McCullum. Frand D. Collins was born in Pennsylvania about 1864. He is a foreman at a factory. His wife, Jennie L., was born in North Carolina about 1859.

Charlie Whitaker rents one part of the next residence at 332 N. McCullum. Charlie was born in Ind. about 1866. He is employed as a street worker.

The other part of 332 N. McCullum is rented by Mr. and Mrs. Leavell. Robert R. Leavell was born in Ind. about 1871. His occupation is listed as a lead carrier. On Dec. 9, 1912 in Henry Co. he married Mary Jennie Merrick. Jennie was born in Ind. about 1887.
