Genealogical Gleanings 104 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the December 21 column.

Following the Drake family at 24 W. Pine Street is the home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bell at 5 W. Pine. Louis A. Bell, a hardware merchant, was born in Ind. about 1860. On Oct. 27, 1897 in Henry Co. he married Florence L. Furgason. She was born in Ind. about 1870.

The Woods family is listed as the homeowners and residents of 15 W. Pine. Mrs. Jennie E. Woods, a widow, lives in the home with two grown children. Jennie was born in Ind. about 1840. Her son Robert M Woods was born in Ind. about 1870 and works as a photographer. Jennie’s daughter Fannie M. Woods was born in Ind. about 1874.

The Edwards family rents the next home listed at 29 W. Pine. Warren L. Edwards was born in Ind. about 1885. He makes his living as a tile factory manufacturer. On Aug. 29, 1911 in Henry Co. he married Daisy F. Saint. She was born in Ind. about 1886. They have one child at home, Margaret E., who was born about 1916.

Mr. Morton Allison lives alone in the next home at 11 W. Pine. Morton was born in Ind. about 1848. He works as a farmer.

Listed next is the Land family at the home they own at 13 W. Pine. John S. Land, a farmer, was born in Ohio about 1848. His wife Clara E. was born in Ind. about 1851. They have one son also living at home. Leonard R. Land was born in Ind. about 1883. He works at a stove company.

The Short family owns the next home shown in this census. The Shorts live at 147 South Franklin Street. Ortie J. Short, a farmer, was born in Ind. about 1871. His wife Maude L., was born in Ind. about 1875.

The Gilbreth family owns the next home listed at 235 S. Franklin. Robert W. Gilbreth was born in North Carolina about 1845. His wife Kathryn M. was born in Ind. about 1880.

The Compton or Campton family (difficult to read) owns the next residence at 232 S. Franklin. Robert O. Campton was born in North Carolina about 1880. He works as a shoe maker at a shoe shop. His wife Susan was born in Ind. about 1884.

Genealogical Gleanings 105 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

  This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the January 4 column.

Following the Compton (or Campton) family at 232 S. Franklin Street is the home owned by widow Ellen L. Call at 225 S. Franklin. Ellen was born in Ind. about 1847. The former Miss Tinney married William Call on Oct 29, 1862 in Henry Co. Ellen’s son James A. Call is also living in the home with his wife and son. James was born in Ind. on Feb 28, 1873. On July 19, 1911 in Marion Co. James married Myrtle F. Horney. She was born in Ind. on Mar 1, 1889. Their son, Stanley J., was born about 1915.

The Maple family owns the next home shown at 146 S. Franklin. John D. Maple was born in Ind. about 1847. On June 8, 1892 in Henry Co. he married Mary I. Glass. Also living in the home is Mary’s sister, Maggie R. Glass, and her mother, Mary H. Glass. Maggie was born about 1849 and her mother was born 1827, both in Pennsylvania.

Minnie N. Parker and Louanna H. Wood live in the next home at 157 S. Franklin. Minnie was born in Ind. about 1862 and is listed as head of the household. Louanna is listed as a roomer. She was born in Ind. about 1859. Both women are widows.

The Sisson family rents the next home listed at 129 S. Franklin. Fred H. Sisson was born in Ind. about 1876. He works as a furniture merchant. On Feb 23, 1898 in Henry Co. Fred married Eva A. Allison. She was born in Ind. about 1878. Their daughter, Dorothy A., who is a college student, is also living at home. She was born in Ind. about 1902.

The Miller family rents the next home shown at 123 S. Franklin. Jennie I. Miller, a widow, was born in Illinois about 1864. Also living in the home with her is her son Hugh V. Miller. He was born in Kansas about 1884. Hugh works as an examiner at the state bank.

Mr. and Mrs. Wiggins own the next home listed at 126 S. Franklin. Marshall Wiggins was born in Ind. about 1868. He works as a gas driller. His wife Mary was born in Ind. about 1863.

The Heckless family owns the next home shown at 117 S. Franklin. Heber C. Heckless was born in Ind. about 1891. He works as a bookkeeper at a factory. His wife Hellen J. was born in Ind. about 1895. They have two sons – David R. (b. about 1915) and Heber C. (b. about 1916).

Genealogical Gleanings 106 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the January 11 column.

Following the Heber Heckless family at 117 S. Franklin Street is the home at 103 S. Franklin owned by widow Nancy L. Heckless, likely the mother or grandmother of the previously detailed Heber Heckless. Nancy was born in Ind. about 1845. Also living in the home is her daughter Alma R. Heckless, who was born in Ind. about 1866.

The Pritchard family owns the next home listed at 38 S. Franklin. Samuel Pritchard was born in Ind. about 1866. He works as a gas driller. On Dec 14, 1918 in Henry Co. he married Anna Fort. She was born in Ind. about 1871. A daughter, Margaret, is living at home as well as Samuel’s mother Sarah Pritchard. Margaret, who was born about 1901, is likely the daughter from a previous marriage. She attends music school. Sarah was born in Ohio about 1840.

The Call family owns the next home shown at 24 S. Franklin. Earl B. Call was born in Ind. about 1886. Mr. Call is a medical physician. On Feb 11, 1909 in Henry Co. he married Carrie L. Herkless. She was born in Ind. about 1886. They have one child living with them. Their son, Clyde E., was born about 1911.

The Reddick family owns the next home listed at 25 S. Franklin. Peter Reddick was born in Ind. about 1836. On Nov 3, 1864 in Henry Co. he married Sariffee Wagner (last name also shown as Waggoner). Sariffee was born in Ind. about 1843.

The Kenwood family is listed next but apparently live at the same address as the Reddick family at 25 S. Franklin. William R. Kenwood was born in Ohio about 1848. His wife Florence was born in Ind. about 1852. They have one child living with them. Wayne H. Kenwood was born about 1877. He is employed as a manager on a farm.

The Larmore family follows. They own the home at 29 S. Franklin. Robert N. Larmore was born in Ind. about 1893. He is a barber working in his own shop. On Jan 7, 1919 in Henry Co. he married Sarah E. Oliver. She was born in Ind. about 1896. They do not yet have any children.

The Liebman family rents the next home shown at 17 West Carey Street. Mary Liebman, who is divorced and runs a rooming house, was born in Ohio about 1888. She has two children living with her: Vernon (b. about 1909) and Stella (b. about 1911). Also living in the home are two roomers: May Clifford, a widow born about 1875, and Jean Edwards, a single woman born about 1898. May works as a seamstress for private families and Jean is an operator for Western Union.

Genealogical Gleanings 107 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the January 18 column.

NOTE: Last week’s column ended with a house on Carey Street. Because the handwriting on this 1920 Knightstown census is often difficult to read, I think this street may actually be Clay Street, not Carey Street.

Following the Leibman family at 17 W. Clay Street (detailed last week) is the home at 15 W. Clay owned by Mrs. Margaret L. Snow. Margaret was born in Ind. about 1872. She is listed as “married” in this census but no husband is enumerated as living in the home. Her daughter Julia A. and son David R. live with her as well as two roomers. Julia was born about 1897 and works as a bookkeeper at a bank. David was born about 1900 and works as a telephone operator. The two roomers are Ida Hamilton (b. about 1863) and Olinta Kinnam (b. about 1897 – name is very difficult to read, might also be Clinta or ?). Ida also works as a telephone operator and Olinta is a school teacher.

The St. Clair family owns the next home listed at 23 W. Clay. William St. Clair was born in Ind. about 1852 and is employed as a butcher in a meat shop. His wife Mary J. was born in Ind. about 1854. Also living in the home is William’s sister Jemima St. Clair. She was born in Ind. about 1841.

The Holland family owns the next home shown at 29 W. Clay. William T. Holland was born in Ind. about 1869 and works as a meat cutter at a butcher shop. On June 26, 1895 in Henry Co. he married Lora A. Oldham. She was born in Ind. about 1870. They have two children living in the home – Agnes J. (b. about 1902) and son Meyer (b. about 1905). NOTE: William is actually listed in the census as Tiffer W. or Tiffen W.

The Scotts rent the next home listed at 35 W. Clay. Claud M. Scott, a farmer, was born in Ind. about 1881. His wife, Afflia H. (name is difficult to read), was born in Pennsylvania about 1882.

Mrs. Stella Barker, a widow, lives alone in the home she owns at 25 W. Clay. Stella was born in Ind. about 1866. She is likely the former Miss Stella Newby who married Jacob E. Barker on July 8, 1884 in Henry Co.

The Smith family rents the next home listed at 10 Grant Street. William H. Smith was born in Ohio about 1842. His wife, Mariah, was born in Kentucky about 1849. (NOTE: There was nothing indicating whether this was East or West Grant Street.)

Genealogical Gleanings 108 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the January 25 column.

Following the home at 10 Grant Street, rented by the Smith family (detailed last week) is the home at 8 Grant Street rented by the McDonalds. Willard McDonald was born in Kentucky about 1899. He works as a section hand at the railroad. On Feb 10, 1919 in Henry Co. he married Della Bowen. She was also born in Kentucky about 1898.

A widow, Clista Jacobs, rents the next house listed at 4 Grant Street. She was born in Kentucky but her age is listed as “unknown.”

The Ravenscraft family rents the next home shown at 3 Grant Street. Clista Ravenscraft was born in Kentucky about 1884. She is divorced but has two children living in the home with her. Her daughter, Esther (name is difficult to read), was born in Kent. about 1906 and her son, Elmer R., was born in Kent. about 1908. Clista works as a laundress in her own home.

Mrs. Margaret McCormack, a widow, owns the next home listed at 5 Grant St. Margaret was born in Ind. about 1855. Margaret has two children still living at home – Pearl (b. about 1884) and Ray (b. about 1893).

The Pitts family rents the next home listed at 15 Grant St. Herman Lee Pitts was born in Ind. about 1880. His occupation is shown as “stationary engineer.” On Feb 14, 1906 in Hancock Co. he married Lena Alice McKown. She was born in Ind. about 1887. They have three children in the home – George A. (b. about 1908), Thelma M. (b. about 1909) and Eva G. (b. about 1911).

Mr. George H. Dent, a widower, owns the next home shown at 23 Grant. George was born in Ind. about 1851. Gloria M. Powers also lives in the home, working as a housekeeper. She was born in Ind. about 1871.

The Edwards family owns the home listed after Mr. Dent at 29 Grant. William H. Edwards was born in Ind. about 1880. His occupation is shown as an operator of a fence factory. On Sept 27, 1901 in Wayne Co. he married Hattie J. Ridenour. She was born in Ind. about 1882. They have three children living at home – Harold W. (b. about 1903), Mildred E. (b. about 1905) and Alta L. (b. about 1907).

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the February 1 column.

Following the Edwards home at 29 Grant Street (detailed last week) is the home rented by the Deem family. Their house number is listed as 13 with the street name shown as the “3rd Grass Street.” Ira S. Deem, a stationary engineer, was born in Ind. about 1874. On Apr 3, 1901 in Marion Co. he married Lillian M. Doan. She was born in Ind. about 1876. They have two children living at home – Edward S. (b. about 1903) and Cora F. (b. about 1906). Edward is employed as a machinist at a factory.

Mrs. Esther McNerney, a widow, is listed next at 5 3rd Grass Street. Esther, who owns the home and lives alone, was born in Ind. about 1862.

Donald Leanelle is shown next as living at 30 W. Jackson Street. Donald was born in Ind. about 1876. He is single, works as a carpenter and rents his place of residence.

Willard George and Andrew George, who are brothers, are listed as the owners of the home at 572 S. Jefferson. Willard was born in Ind. about 1854 and is a farmer. Andrew was born in Ind. about 1858 and works as a taxi driver.

The Mattix family owns the next home listed as 104 Third Grass Street. Omer D. Mattix was born in Ind. about 1865. He works as a machinist in a factory. On Feb 25, 1886 in Henry Co. he married Laura B. Archibald. She was born in Ind. about 1863.

Mrs. Laura M. Lasters, a widow, is listed next at 118 Third Grass Street. Laura was born in Ind. about 1870. She earns a living as a laundress in her home.

Another widow, Mary L. Stephens, lives at the next home listed at 114 Third Grass Street. Mary was born in Ind. about 1844.

The Lewis family owns the next home listed at 126 Third Grass Street. Joseph “Joe” S. Lewis was born in Ind. about 1874. He is employed as a foreman at a fence factory. On Oct 1, 1896 in Henry Co. he married Myla L. Moffitt. She was born in Ind. about 1877. Also living in the home is their son, Forest R. Lewis, and his wife and son. Forest was born in Ind. about 1900 and is also employed at a fence factory as a laborer. Elsie G., his wife of about one year, was born in Ind. about 1900. They have one child, Forest G., who was born in Ind. about Sept or Oct of 1916.

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the February 8 column.

Following the home of Joe Lewis at 126 Third Grass Street is the home owned by Daniel C. and Mary M. Lewis at 140 Third Grass Street. Daniel was born in Ind. about 1851. He works as a laborer at a cemetery. On June 15, 1871 in Henry Co. Daniel married the former Mary Kinder. She was also born in Ind. about 1851.

The Downey family owns the next home listed at 162 W. Grant Street. Horace Amos Downey, a carpenter, was born in Ind. about 1853. On Dec 1, 1875 in Shelby Co. he married Mattie Elizabeth Young. She was also born in Ind. about 1853. Also living in the home with them is their daughter Glendora and her husband, Jesse N. Downing. Glendora was born in Ind. about 1880. She first married Albert Patrick in Shelby Co. on June 1, 1896. Then on Dec 22, 1919 in Henry Co. she married Jesse. He was born in Ind. about 1884. Jesse is employed as an electrician.

The Thomas family owns the next home shown at 109 W. Grant Street. John L. Thomas was born in Kentucky about 1878. He is employed as a laborer in a factory. His wife Mary was born in Ky. about 1879. They have five children living in the home. The three oldest children were born in Kentucky and the youngest two were born in Ind. Their son Bruce, a college student, was born about 1903. The other children include James P. (b. about 1906), Flora M. (b. about 1909), Opal A. (b. about 1912) and Margaret (b. about 1917).

The Shipley family rents the next home listed at 105 W. Grant. John M. Shipley was born in Ind. about 1867. He works as a trucker in farming. On Aug 12, 1896 in Hancock Co. he married Rosa B. Pitts. She was born in Ind. about 1863. They have five children living in the home – Paul E. (b. about 1899), Herbert L. (b. about 1901), Lucille E. (b. about 1904), Doris L. (b. about 1906) and Morris E. (b. about 1906). Both Doris and Morris are listed as age 14 so they may be twins. Paul is employed as an engineer at the power company.

The Gorman family is the last home listed on this census page as living on Grant Street. They rent the home at 101 W. Grant. Charles Gorman was born in Kentucky about 1893. He is employed as a wood chopper. His wife, Inez A. Gorman, was born in Ind. about 1897. They have two children – Ralph E. (b. 1916) and Russell L. (b. 1918).

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the February 15 column.

Following the Gorman family (detailed last week) at 101 W. Grant Street is the home of John T. Pipe at 592 S. Madison Street (note: house number is difficult to read; may be 572 rather than 592). John was born in Ind. about 1851 and he worked as a brickmason. Mr. Pipe is a widower. His daughter, Lola L. Gillette, who is a widow, lives in the home also. She was born in Ind. about 1872.

The Kinnier family is listed next at 512 S. Madison. Mike Kinnier was born in Pennsylvania about 1856. Mike is employed as a printer. His wife Josephine was born in Ind. about 1858. Their granddaughter, Dorothy Kinnier, is also living in the home. She was born in Ind. about 1903.

The Archibald family owns the next home at 432 S. Madison. Earl Archibald was born in Ind. about 1876. On Dec 9, 1907 in Henry Co. he married Susie Gorman. She was born in Ind. about 1885. Floyd Archibald, Earl’s son from an earlier marriage, is also living in the home. Both men work in a garage.

The Ramsey family owns the next home shown at 331 S. Madison. Lewis P. Ramsey was born in Ohio about 1864. He works as a carpenter in a factory. His wife, Francis B., was born in Ohio about 1857. Also living in the home is their daughter Lucy and her husband William J. Adams. Lucy was born in Ohio about 1898. William was born in Kentucky about 1898. He works as a carpenter at the railroad.

The Margason family follows. Simeon Margason owns the home at 332 S. Madison. He was born in Ind. about 1842. On Jan 19, 1875 in Hendricks Co. he married Nancy A. Stewart. She was born in Ind. about 1852.

The Keller family rents the next home at 323 S. Madison. Kosy E. Keller was born in Ind. about 1878. He is employed as a driver at the cream? station. On Dec 10, 1903 in Adams Co. he married Alice M. Wheeler. She was born in Ohio about 1878. They have four children at home - Emma M. (b. about 1907), John J. (b. about 1909), Claude R. (b. about 1912) and Ray A. (b. about 1917).

The Stevens family rents the next home listed at 314 S. Madison. Edmond Stevens was born in Ind. about 1867. He works as a laborer in a factory. His wife, Ola B. Stevens, was born in Ind. about 1870. Their son, Herman Stevens, is also living in the home. He was born in Ind. about 1894. He is a machinist at a factory.

Following the Stevens home at 314 S. Madison (detailed last week) is the home at 307 S. Madison owned by the Huddleston family. Otto H. Huddleston was born in Ind. about 1877. He works as a newspaper agent. His wife, Kathryn V., was born in Ohio about 1881. They have one son, Virgil V., living at home. He was born in Ind. about 1901.

Mr. and Mrs. Dora own the next home listed at 303 S. Madison. John Dora was born in Kentucky about 1857. He works as a baker in a bakery. On Sept 5, 1907 in Henry Co. he married Anna McManis. She was born in Ind. about 1858.

Mrs. Alice M. Vestal, a widow, owns the next home enumerated at 6 S. Madison. Alice was born in Ind. about 1854. On Mar 5, 1879 in Henry Co. the former Miss Alice M. Kirk married J. Frank Vestal. Alice’s daughter Ethyl is also living in the home. She was born in Ind. about 1899. She works as a bookkeeper for a garage.

The Fowlers rent the next home listed at 18 S. Madison. George C. T. Fowler was born in England about 1851. He came to America in 1864 and now works as a paper hanger. His wife, Eliza E., was born in Ind. about 1856.

Eli Coon lives alone in the next home at 23 S. Madison. Mr. Coon is divorced. He was born in Ind. about 1844. He is a section foreman at the railroad.

The Lefter family follows at 27 S. Madison. William L. Lefter was born in Ind. about 1864 and also works as a section foreman at the railroad. On June 26, 1889 in Henry Co. he married Dora Coon. She was born in Ind. about 1871. They have one son living at home. Clifford E. Lefter was born in Ind. about 1903.

The Dormer family owns the next home listed at 26 S. Madison. Guy R. Dormer was born in Ind. about 1891. He is a merchant of a variety store. His wife, Nellie L., was born in Ind. about 1892. They have three children – Goodwin G. (b. about 1915), Ardis L. (b. about 1917) and Ray J. (b. about 1919).

The Porter family owns the next home at 34 S. Madison. Fremont Porter was born in Ind. about 1860. He is a contractor working in carpentry. His wife, Mary A., was born in Ind. about 1861. They have two children living at home – Leo W. (b. about 1882) and Carrie M. (b. about 1886).

Genealogical Gleanings 113 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing the families living in Knightstown residences in 1920 from where we left off in the March 1 column (there was no column published in last week’s March 8 issue).

Following the home of the Porter family at 34 S. Madison (detailed in last column) is the home owned by the Maxwell family at 104 S. Madison Street. Mrs. Alta V. Maxwell, a widow, was born in Ohio about 1878. Her deceased husband, Charles Maxwell, was born in Rush Co. in Dec 1978, the son of James and Henrietta Maxwell. He died between June 1900 and Dec 1920. Two children of Alta’s are living in the home with her in 1920. Claude E. Maxwell was born in Apr 1900, likely in Henry Co. He is working as a meat cutter at a butcher shop in the 1920 census. Another son, Loren C. Maxwell, is also at home. He was born in Ind. about 1903 and is listed as college student in the 1920 census.

Following the Maxwell home is the home owned by the Lewis family at 112 S. Madison. Perry C. Lewis was born in Ind. about 1873. He is employed as a drayman. On Oct 18, 1893 in Henry Co. Perry married Clara E. Collins. She was born in Ind. about 1875. Living at home is their daughter Thurza R. Craig and her daughter Betty J. Craig. Thurza was born in Ind. about 1898. She had married Donald O. Craig on Dec 19, 1914 in Henry Co. but they have divorced. Betty was born about 1915. Also living in the home is Perry’s aunt, Margaret Kinder. She was born in Ind. about 1838.

The Smith family rents the next home listed at 109 S. Madison. Ora A. Smith was born in Ind. about 1887. He is employed as a clerk in a restaurant. On May 26, 1908 in Henry Co. he married Maggie Green. She was born in Ind. about 1888. They have three children, all sons, including Arden A. (b. about 1910), Edward M. (b. about 1914) and Victor M. (b. about 1916).

The Paulson family rents the next home shown at 120 S. Madison. James C. Paulson was born in Ind. about 1885, the son of Danish immigrants. He works as a painter. On Nov 7, 1907 in Henry Co. he married Anna Myrtle Woodruff. Myrtle was born in Ind. about 1870 and is 15 years old than James. Also living in the home is Myrtle’s mother, Sarah Fowler. She was born in Ind. about 1851.

James O’Maley, a widower, lives alone in the home he owns at 117 S. Madison, enumerated after the Paulsons. James was born in Ind. about 1855. He works as a blacksmith at a factory.

Following the home of James O’Maley at 117 S. Madison (detailed last week) is the home owned by the Hibbert family at 124 S. Madison. Henry B. Hibbert was born in Virginia about 1857. She works as a bookkeeper at a bank.

The Banks family rents the next home shown at 127 S. Madison (house number and last name are difficult to read so this might be incorrect). Oscar J. Banks was born in Ind. about 1886. He works as a baker in a bakery. His wife, Lesha E., was born in Ind. about 1888 or 1898.

The Craig family owns the next home listed at 129 S. Madison. William H. Craig was born in Ind. about 1851. He earns a living as a painter. His wife, Mary E., was born in Iowa about 1855.

Mrs. Jessie Hewitt, a widow, owns the next home shown at 138 S. Madison. The former Miss Jessie A. Welborn was born in Ind. about 1853. She married Charles Hewitt on Oct 16, 1879 in Henry Co. Mr. Hewitt died sometime before 1900 as Jessie is listed as a widow in that year’s census also. One son and his wife are living in home as well. Donald S. Hewitt was born in Ind. about 1889. He earns a living as a general electrician. On Feb 20, 1913 in Henry Co. he married Ruby Leavell. She was born in Ind. about 1893.

Mrs. Martha Metsker, also a widow, owns the next home listed at 203 S. Madison. Mrs. Metsker was born in Ind. about 1856. She has two sons still living at home. Ward E. Metsker was born about 1878 in Ohio and Frank M. Metsker was born about 1881 in Ohio. Both men work as painters in a factory.

The Cline family owns the next home at 221 S. Madison. Jesse C. Cline, a widower, was born in Pennsylvania about 1869. He is an insurance agent. Only his daughter Ruth E. Cline is still living at home. Ruth was born in Illinois about 1896.

The Sannons family is listed after the Clines in the home they rent at 225 S. Madison. James Sannons was born in Ind. about 1882. His wife, Frances, was born in Ind. about 1892. They have four children – Hallie (b. about 1909), Florence (b. about 1914), Maria (b. about 1916), and Pauline (b. about 1918). Also living in the home is Frances’ mother Phebe Swartz and her sister Mildred D. Swartz. Mrs. Swartz was born in Ind. about 1868 and Mildred was born in Ind. about 1903.
