Genealogical Gleanings 87 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

This week’s column continues detailing information on the families living in Knightstown in the year 1920. Though street and house numbers are listed in this census, these numbers likely changed in the early to mid 1900’s. If more accurate information can be uncovered on the house numbers, updates will be provided in the future.

Also, please note that this 1920 census does not list the number of years a couple has been married nor does it show the number of children a mother has had. This census also does not provide the month and year of birth, but only shows the age of the person. The census does indicate whether a family owns their home or whether they are renters.

Also residing at this address are Mr. and Mrs. William Edwards. William, an optician in general practice, was born in Ind. about 1847. On Sept 18, 1867 in Henry Co. he married Emma L. Bell. There is no indication that the Fithians and Edwardses are related.

Genealogical Gleanings 88 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

As stated in an earlier column, Bonnie Manche offered to do some cross-referencing with other resources she has to see if we can determine more accurate information about the address and families listed in the 1920 census. Bonnie emailed me after last week stating she had turned to the 1938 New Castle / Henry County City Directory to look for the names listed in my last column and reported:

“Some were living at another location and some at the same. In 1938, Marie, wife of James Hamilton, now widowed, was still living at 43 S. Adams St. Marie was 93 years old when she died. Adah, wife of Charles Fithian, now widowed, was still at 37 S. Adams.  She died at 78 years old. All are buried in Glen Cove Cemetery. Since the 1920 Census doesn't designate south or north this would be some new information for you.”

Further updates and/or corrections will be provided to Banner readers as we become of aware of them.

Genealogical Gleanings 90 – Knightstown 1920 Census continued

I received some wonderful news from Bonnie Manche this past week that certainly makes it appear as if the mystery on the date in which the numbering of homes changed has been solve, or at least narrowed down. Bonnie told me:

“The Stites family in the July 13, 2005 Banner still has relatives in Knightstown. I was waiting for a family that I could identify with family still living in Knightstown. I called Randall and Donna Miller to ask them about the house at 145 [S.] Washington Street. Donna has fond memories of the family in that house. Smith M. and Clair G. Stites are Randall’s grandparents. His mother was Margaret E. Stites Miller.  I also called Pat Bradford since her daughter lives there now. Pat had some special memories of the Stites family as her family had rented the house from them several years ago. The address and house of 145 S. Washington is the same address in the 1926 and 1947 Sanford Fire maps and our present day phone book. And it is the same in the 1920 Census. It is not the same number in the 1916 fire map. This means the address numbers would be mostly the same except for a few houses/businesses that might have been torn down and/or added on vacant lots. So, now we know that the change was between 1916 and 1920. That narrows it down some for us for the exact date.”

I, for one, am happy to hear this (and I’m sure Bonnie was glad to figure this out too). It has bothered me since I started the 1920 gleanings that I might be putting out information that is misleading or confusing. So, with this issue apparently worked out, I will get back to work.

This week’s column continues detailing information on the families living in Knightstown in the year 1920.
